Fireships is one of Hammill's most consistently quiet, intimate works; a collection of relationship odes similar in mood to 1984's The Love Songs. Hammill, even at his most reflective, is highly poetic and intense. Each of the nine numbers is given ample room to breathe, with most ranging between 5 and 7 minutes. A hint of tragedy, a smoldering fire, burns below the surface of even the most languorous numbers, like the highlight "His Best Girl." ~ Roch Parisien

| Fireships Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Rediscovering Hammill Being a long-time Hammill fan, since the mid-70s, I have to admit that I wasn't paying attention to this man's work during most of the 90s. After his embrace of MIDI technology during the latter half of the 80s, and the ensuing debacle of the "Skin" and "In a Foreign Town" albums, the latter being one even Hammill no longer offers, I felt that here's an arti9st being subsumed by the times and technology. In fact, at the time, I felt that the whole of the 80s weren't kind the Hammill and his ilk. Times and musical styles had moved on, and artists from the 70s had to adapt or get out. Some tried to adapt and lingered on in embarrassing hybrid new wave modes and others disappeared, yet Hammill lingered.
Well, I'm glad he did. Looking back now, the "Fireships" cd, along with "Out of Water" and "And Close as This" (one of his overall best, I feel, released almost concurrently with the aforementioned "Skin", oddly enough) are a set of work that show he could master the technology, and settle into a style that's both personal and true to his roots. Of course, he's still on the fringes of the business, but when was that ever different? "Fireships" shows and artist comfortable with his situation, and making music because that is what he does.
Starting off with several instant Hammill classics, "I Will Find You", the kind of poppish love song he comes out with on occasion, into "Curtains", one of those scathing looks at failed relationships he's almost too famous for, on to more of the same in "His Best Girl", and shifting gears with "Oasis", dabbling in mysterious Middle-Eastern settings, a la "Ysabel's Dance", from "Sitting Targets", another of Hammill's gems. The mood continues with "Incomplete Surrender", "Fireships","Given Time", an quasi-instrumental interlude in "Reprise", on into "Gaia", a prayer almost, a love song to the planet.
Now, I've neglected to mention, that at this point in history, we're seeing a new Peter Hammill here, an atmospheric, "ambient" Peter Hammill, which foretells the coming masterpieces that grace 1997's "Everyone You Hold" and the next year's "This". The percussion is very understated on this album, where it appears at all, in favor of string arrangements and quieter vocal settings. Let's face it, besides the unique songwriting, it's Hammill's voice that is his main instrument, but gone now is the shouting, growling Hammill of his youth, though he still lets loose in concert. He's been replaced by a more thoughful (is that possible?), let's say calmer singer, who's more interested in melody (one of the strongest points of his songwriting) and inflection. Dare I say, a more "mature" artist (eeew), not seeking to overwhelm you with bombast and sound, but paying careful attention to details.
Not that he gave up on Rock'n'Roll in any way. After all, his next album is called "The Noise". Submitted by Douglas (Los Angeles, CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.69 LOOK INTO THE EYEBALL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.
Like its predecessor FEELINGS, LOOK INTO THE EYEBALL folds David Byrne's various sonic preoccupations--funk, world music, string quartets, quirky pop-rock with heady lyrics--into a relatively seamless whole. "Like Humans" bears a post-modern R&B slant that recalls SPEAKING ...

| | Jason Lindner Premonition CDs (2000)
Fireships music CDs
$9.65 If one wants a good idea of where New York jazz was heading as of the year 2000, this album is a good place to start. Pianist Jason Lindner's Stretch Records debut showcases the big band he has paid dues with at New York's Smalls club for several years. The leader's piano plays a relatively minor role, but his prowess as a composer and arranger comes across loud and clear. Lindner's eclecticism is bold and purposeful, not trendy. A brief, highly modern intro opens the record, giving way to the classic, bop-oriented big-band sound of the title track, which features a great tenor break by guest soloist Gregory Tardy. But then trombonist Avi Lebovich's "Mr. Demargary" comes along, defying categorization altogether, setting up spirited trading between Alex Norris on flügelhorn and Diego Urcola on muted trumpet, as well as a sweet Fender Rhodes solo by Lindner. It's not bebop, it's not Latin, it's not funk: it's all of these things and more, a precocious brew with an urban, bohemian edge.
The album continues along these unpredictable lines. There's Lindner's avant-leaning two-part "Space" suite, his ballad "Aquarius," and two more charts by Lebovich: the rubato horn chorale "Avner" and the Latin-tinged, enigmatic "Closure." Guest bassist Avishai Cohen's brilliant "Gaga," with over the top wah-wah electric bass and Rhodes textures, sounds like interplanetary party music. "Mary's Vibe," dedicated to the late pianist ...

| | Ot Azoj Klezmerband Zets CD (2004)
Fireships CD music
$12.15 Like most types of world music, klezmer has its traditionalists as well as its forward thinkers. The traditionalists try to emulate as closely as possible the East European Jewish traditions of yesteryear; the forward thinkers (someone like Brooklyn clarinetist David Krakauer, for example) try to keep klezmer moving ahead. Zets isn't as daring or radical as Krakauer's recordings -- which have combined klezmer with funk, rock, blues, jazz, and hip-hop -- but it isn't the work of klezmer purists either. On this 2003 effort, the Ot Azoj Klezmerband fuses klezmer with a variety of East European styles, including Bulgarian, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, and Balkan music -- and while Krakauer's innovations are a fascinating east/west hybrid, Ot Azoj aren't nearly as mindful of styles that were created in the United States. One major exception is "Jiddish Melody ...
| | Jacques Brel Grand Jacques (Vol.1) CD (2005) (Import) Vol1; France
Fireships music CDs
$15.25 GRAND JACQUES, issued on France's Universal label, is a compilation of the versatile, inimitable, and ever-enduring French singer Jacques Brel.
Although the Jacques Brel catalog has seen extensive re-invigoration over the last several years, it's also important to look back in time a little further, to this mid-'90s reissue of the early, classy-beyond-classic Grand Jacques. A marvelous disc which keeps the original running order of the vinyl, Grand Jacques is, with hindsight, a masterful collection of songs recorded during 1955 and 1956, at the beginning of Brel's storied career, and a glimpse into a style of chanson that he seldom returned to once he'd swept France, Europe, and then the States with his best-known classics just a couple years on. While Brel already has a strong sense of his lyric and arrangement, this kind of writing only comes once in a great while. But what is perhaps most interesting ...
