| | Version City CD (1 Customer Review)
On this compilation, several ska artists collaborate to map the earliest sounds of the style's movement. There is no shortage of ska albums to date, but Version City is an exemplary one. Tracks such as "Motel Room" by Lord Sluggo and "Cocaine" by Lord Sluggo and the Demanders are two cuts in a block of lo-fi, steadily rocking tracks; the two send shivers down one's spine, urging one to play them over and over. Further along in this well-ordered collection is a sub-tropical jubilance from Ua Hele Kakou, Crazy Baldhead, and Gravity as the island and two-tone sounds mix. Also included is a reverb-laden worldbeat/reggae dub from Mutiny, a smoking and horn-fueled "Midnight Version" from Selika with Django. This is an excellent and easy-flowing look at the root sounds of this reggae subgenre and the course of its development. ~ Tom Schulte
The record that started it all, featuring members of Stubborn All-Stars, Skinnerbox, the Slackers, The Pilfers, Bouncing Souls, The Pietasters, The Toasters, Dub Is A Weapon, The Scofflaws and more! This collaboration features a host of New York City's finest, best-known and most productive ska musicians getting busy together, building tracks at Stubborn's Version City Studio. The end result is something entirely new and unique, something that could only happen at Version City. In 1997 the New York City Ska scene exploded with a sound which shook the world. With the success of bands such as Skinnerbox, Stubborn All-Stars, The Toasters, The Scofflaws, Mephiskapheles, The Slackers, and The Insteps, the New York sound made an indelible and global impression on ska music. Stubborn Records' Version City Studio was a hotbed of the creativity which spawned this movement. Members of all of these bands and more collided at impromptu recording sessions and jammed together regularly at Stubborn's Version City parties. The Version City concept fostered a level of interplay and activity which has not been seen in ska since Kingston, Jamaica in the 1960's. The music that came out of this environment ruled the international ska scene in its day and set a benchmark for the present and future of ska, rocksteady and reggae! Version City music CDs
$9.99 The number of female reggae artists has increased since the 1970s, but many of them are crossover artists with a slick, ultra-commercial approach; not many of them are expressing a decidedly Rastafarian point of view. But one female reggae artist of the 21st century who could honestly claim to be following in the footsteps of Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths is Ventrice Morgan, aka Queen I-Frica, whose MONTEGO BAY makes no secret of her Rastawoman perspective. A few of the ...

| | Smash Mouth Fush Yu Mang CD (1997)
Version City album
$12.65 Smash Mouth is not just another of those predictable third-wave ska bands that appear and disappear faster than one can say The Specials. Don't worry skankers, FUSH YU MANG provides enough horns-and-guitar ska rhythms to keep you bobbing your head indefinitely. Smash Mouth adds some nice touches to their ska-based sound by fusing it with 1950's science-fiction-movie sound effects, Beach Boys-like background vocals, and Cuban folk rhythms. Smash Mouth isn't afraid of hitting the distortion pedal for some delicious guitar licks. Be careful kids: FUSH YU MANG may have you skanking so hard that you'll injure a vital organ.

$21.45 Feel Welcome! The Bernese band, Brothertunes, made firm footing within the Swiss music scene when winning first prize in the category Pop/Rock at the M4Music (05). The first radio single 'Sincerely yours ' from the Debut Album 'Come close' entered the charts straight into the Top 50. In April 2006. they went on to be voted the 'Swiss Top Act' of the month by Swiss National Radio DRS3. Shortly after, the German music magazine "Musikmarkt" praised the two aspiring Swiss artists and their album, convinced that their talent would be recognised beyond Swiss boarders. Further success followed in October 2006, when Brothertunes were voted by listeners of Radio Swiss Pop as the 'Swiss Newcomers of the Year'. This was the first ...
| | A J and the Two-timers Please Gimme Somethin' CD (2009)
Version City music CDs
$8.55 In the early to mid 1980s, northeast Ohio had a strivingroots/rockabilly scene with acts such as Alan Leatherwood, TheSwingin' Caddilacs, David Loy & the Ramrods, The Walking Clampetts andmore. One of these bands, Tempo Tantrum, was lead by a cat namedAllen Jeffries (aka Jeff Pollock). Tempo Tantrum built its name oncombining a hard-rocking sensibility with classic rockabilly and surfsounds. All good things come to an end, and by the late 1980s, most of thesebands were gone, as was the rockabilly 'scene'. Allen Jeffries, alifelong rockabilly addict, never stopped collecting rockabilly sidesand longed to return to singing. Fast forward to 2008: Allen Jeffriesfelt it was time! He contacted his old friend, cult rockabilly legendMemphis Mike to produce this, his debut CD. The two picked out acollection of classic rockin' tracks and Memphis Mike put together astudio band featuring himself (guitars and upright bass), LegendaryTremblers bassist Rob Jacob (electric bass) and former LinkWray/Vibrochamps drummer Gary Weiss. Rounding out the sounds are westcoast sax phenom Carly Litvik and The Jagtones (Joey & Hermy Granatiof the Granati Bros.). The basic ...
