Camden's hearty, 21-song showcase of Françoise Hardy is an excellent set, offering an appealing place for the curious to start if the two-disc set of her work, The Vogue Years, seems a bit too much to immediately delve into. Titled simply Françoise Hardy, this collection takes the listener on a romp through Hardy's wonderfully catchy works of the '60s, collecting some of her best and well-known tracks such as "Les Temps des Souvenirs" and others while giving an excellent document of her vast stylistic experimentation, the incredible arrangements which graced her superb songs, and her confident and direct approach. ~ Gregory McIntosh
Import reissue of the French pop icon's 1964 album. 12 tracks including 'Tu Ne Dis Rien', 'Pars' & 'Dans Le Monde Entier'. BMG.

Francoise Hardy album
$23.29 This collection of tracks by pop singer, Billy Vaughn, features such trademark songs as "La Paloma", "Lili Marleen", and "Blue Hawaii".
Studio orchestra leader Billy Vaughn may have been even more popular in Germany in the 1950s and '60s than he was in the U.S., which helps explain why the most comprehensive compilation of his work originates there. This two-CD, 50-track album of original Dot Records recordings contains 20 of Vaughn's 28 Billboard Hot 100 chart entries, including the major U.S. hits "Melody of Love," "The Shifting Whispering Sands," "Sail Along Silvery Moon" and "Raunchy." Then there are songs that topped the German charts, like "Wheels" and "La Paloma." The set ...

Francoise Hardy songs
$13.95 WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time changes gave the group a complexity that hadn't been experienced for an entire decade in the rock genre. "YTSE Jam" was essentially their answer to Rush's "YYZ" and became a staple in the band's live set. The session was marred mostly by subpar singing, too many metal clichés, and poor production. There is, however, enough interesting playing to make it a worthwhile listen for fans of this genre, and is certainly essential for Dream Theater fans. ~ Robert Taylor

| | Danzig III: How The Gods Kill CD (1992) Import
Francoise Hardy songs
$13.85 This limited edition release contains the CD for HOW THE GODS KILL and a videocassette featuring the video for the title track. The set is packaged in a 6x12 box and features a 3-dimensional rendering of H.R. Giger's surreal album art.
Danzig's 1992 release, DANZIG III: HOW THE GODS KILL, turned out to be the group's highest-charting studio album. It was also the first Danzig album to be produced entirely by the group's singer/songwriter/leader Glenn Danzig, and would prove to be the last album to include original drummer Chuck Biscuits. Like its two predecessors, DANZIG III (which featured horrific cover art by H.R. Geiger), continued to broaden the quartet's fanbase, while maintaining the band's unmistakable stamp (slow and crunchy riffs, tales of sex and the devil, Danzig's Jim Morrison-like vocal delivery, etc.).
"Dirty Black Summer" is the album's standout track, as it deals with memories of Glenn Danzig's childhood, while ...

| | Putumayo Baila!: A Latin Dance Party CD (2006)
Francoise Hardy CD music
$10.69 Putumayo's bread and butter lies in Latin releases, and as they get bigger they also seem to get better at picking out a proper variety that can meld together into a coherent compilation while still retaining the ideal of being particularly worldly. Here, they do it again with an omnipresent groove. The pieces here clump pretty closely around the Cuban styles, but the bands are as far flung as one would expect from Putumayo. The album opens with a slick number from Raul Paz, a Cuban living in Paris. Senegalese son follows quickly, performed flawlessly. Soon these are followed by a contemporary version of a boogaloo (with hints of Rob Thomas perhaps?), a proper old-school salsa, and some updated timba (from Sweden, no less). The first departure from straightforward Cuban sounds doesn't come until midway through the album, with the addition of a soukous motive mixed into a strong salsa from Ricardo Lemvo (and largely in Lingala!). Right after that though, the departures from Cuba becomes stronger, with los Pinguos, who slyly convert a bit of Argentine folk into reggae, and then into a more Cuban sound. ...

| | Zrada CD (2009)
Francoise Hardy album
$18.25 Relentless. Harmonious. Supernatural. Chaotic. Beautiful. Filled with sultry gypsy dances, so-cal punk rock, reggae and ska, the self-titled debut from Zrada, ushers a new era of harmonious insanity. The citizens of Zradastan welcome you to their world of contradictions. Bring your passport. Zrada’s eponymous release is a force of nature. The album projects the same beauty, emotion and themes of many of Zrada’s ancestors’ songs… with gunfire and double bass pedals for good measure. With 16 tracks of romance and mayhem, Zrada takes you into a complex world of melodies and distortion. Finely crafted, intricately complex yet simple to listen to - Zrada challenges you into shed your pre-conceptions of Eastern Europeamusic. Kicking off with a traditional drinking song, Zrada doesn’t take long shedding the cloak of tradition, kicking straight into “Give me a Liquor” – a song about the escapism of excess. Combining punk rock and a heavy funk riff “The Young Writer” will get you up off of your feet. “ ...
