| | Lunachicks Binge & Purge CD Lunachicks Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Audio Mixers: Matthew Kasha; Mason Temple. Recording information: SST, Weehawken, NJ. Photographer: Michael Lavine. More Poison than punk rock, the Lunachicks' follow-up to the promising Babysitters on Acid is disjointed and disappointing. There's no denying that the debut's ingredients didn't disappear -- Binge & Purge is just as gross and lewd, just as drunk on big garage rock slobber as before. But without any new moves -- actually with a dial down of humor and hyperactivity -- it can only work as a hobbled companion piece to their early back catalog. The Lunachicks were much more talented than songs like "This Is Serious" and "Apathetic" implied. Considering the punk-art gallows humor of their beginnings and the refined assault on the senses in Jerk of All Trades and Pretty Ugly, Binge & Purge is best viewed as a mid-interest liaison between the band's two defining styles. ~ Dean CarlsonRolling Stone (4/1/93, p.54) - 3 Stars - Good - "...a call to arms and a celebration of the endurance of tough-rocking women....BINGE & PURGE has the ragged purity of a bootleg..." Alternative Press (3/93, p.52) - "...more than any other petulent foxcorettes, they bring the penchant of Joan Jett and Lita Ford's teenage band for structured pop with plenty of wattage straight into the '90s..." With songs unleashed from the soul of Roger Daltrey, Under a Raging Moon is a short voyage into the psyche of an aging rock star who has plenty to reveal. Daltrey's bitterness about growing older while gasping for every last breath of a youth gone by gives this album heart and a certain emotional dimension, coming to a head on the title track. His thunderous but passionate ode to his former friend and drummer Keith Moon is a fervent downpour of frustration that can be truly felt inside every line of the song. A spectacular drum solo from Mark Brzezicki is a modest tribute to the late ...

| | Mika Life In Cartoon Motion CD (2007)
Binge & Purge
$9.99 On his 2007 debut, LIFE IN CARTOON MOTION, U.K.-based performer Mika (born Michael Holbrook Penniman) offers up a set of songs as vibrant and bold as the album's colorful cover. Boasting a multi-octave vocal range, Mika readily recalls both Queen's Freddie Mercury and the Bee-Gees, and like those artists, the young singer/pianist glides effortlessly between buoyant glam-tinged pop ("Grace Kelly") and falsetto-wielding disco ("Love Today"), making LIFE one of the most curiously impressive radio-friendly releases of the year. Mika's vivid, aptly named debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, borrows and builds on the glittery, glamorous, and not-so-secretly sentimental musical territory carved out by Elton John and Freddie Mercury, or more recently, Rufus Wainwright and the Scissor Sisters. Fortunately, his name-dropping, shape-shifting pop is usually good, and genuine, enough to come across as eloquent homage rather than blatant thievery or a tired rehash. Mika's singles are his most charming moments, especially the instant sunshine of "Grace Kelly," which crams tap-dancing rhythms, filmic dialogue, Elton's pianos, Freddie's vocal harmonies, and Brian May's guitars into just over three minutes. "Relax (Take It Easy)" is in the same vein of hypnotic, danceable melancholy as the Scissor Sisters' reworking of "Comfortably Numb," albeit ...
