(1 Customer Review)
On HOT's opening track, "Drum Straight," Half Japanese burst out with a sound twice the size of the average five-piece combo. But HOT is not all about volume. The second song, the joyful "True Believers," pays homage, in both texture and song structure, to the Velvet Underground's "We're Gonna Have A Real Good Time Tonight."
This set also includes another one of Jad Fair's stellar ballads, "Lucky Ones." Its chiming guitars seem worlds away from the beautiful racket of the early days (when notes were never so specifically employed). There is a clear sense of continuity between HOT and the early work however, attributable to the fact that Jad's personality and world view are so much a part of this band's identity. Fair is never short of believable in anything he sings, and his musical cohorts always fall in step with his distinctive aesthetic.

| Hot Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) "Oh My Head! Oh My Head!" Christ, track one, "Drum Straight" just assaulted my bleedin' eardrums, then the next track, "True Believers" was almost Buddy Holly pure. And they work so nicely next to each other. Jad Fair and longtime collegues John Sluggett on guitar and toy piano, Gilles Rieder on drums, and Mick Hobbs and Jason Willett alternating on the bass, really explore some strong emotional territory. Songs about vampires ("Vampire") and junkies ("Black Fruit") and of course Jad's obsession, true love ("True Believers", "Lucky Ones") comprise this occasionally brutal sounding outing. But the beauties are SO sweet. Lucky Ones has a lovely ringing guitar figure that'll make you remember your first kiss. A very original band if you don't already know them. | | Love Spirals Downwards Temporal: A Collection Of Music Past And Present CD (2000)
Hot music CDs
$13.19 Love Spirals Downward's Temporal: A Collection of Music Past & Present gathers early songs, remixes, and previously unavailable tracks, showcasing the transitions in their ethereal, folky, and now subtly electronic sound. Working in reverse chronological order, the album emphasizes this new direction with remixes of "Alicia" and "Misunderstood," the Flux track "Ring," and the previously unreleased "Asleep." As always, Suzanne Perry's sumptuous vocals and Ryan Lum's playing and arrangements make this collection an atmospheric yet engaging delight, particularly on songs like "Amarillo," "Mediterrenea," "Depression Glass," and the live version of "Subsequently." Though it's not necessarily a good starting point for Love Spirals Downwards, Temporal is a fine overview of their past, present, and future sound. ~ Heather Phares
Love Spirals Downwards are the unconscious mind of ethereal music, evoking forgotten memories with subjective, alien tongues. The sounds drift dreamily through one's thoughts like incense permeates the air -- perhaps the spicy fragrance will seduce you like a lover to its heat, or else it will elude the threshold of perception and weave itself into the mind's strata of buried experiences... Love Spirals Downwards was begun in the late 80's by multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Lum, but didn't truly take flight until the addition of girlfriend-turned-vocalist, Suzanne Perry, in 1991. Two of their three initial demo tracks were featured on the Across this Grey Land ...

$12.65 From 1994 to 2002, The Providers rocked clubs throughout Connecticut (with occasional jaunts to New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Kenyon College in Ohio) with an intelligent and danceable blend of rock 'n' roll, blues, rockabilly and country that earned praise from audiences and critics alike. A restless sense of musical exploration led the band to share bills with acts as disparate as John Mayall, The Radiators, De La Soul, They Might Be Giants, Johnny Winter, NRBQ, Ronnie Earl, Roomful of Blues and The Slip over the course of eight years together. $14.35 When Willie "Loco" Alexander & the Boom Boom Band split after 1979's Meanwhile...Back in the States on MCA, Alexander immediately picked up the slack by having a Boston area power trio, the Neighborhoods, back him up on-stage while he began recording the first of his many releases on the European New Rose label. The original Boom Boom Band reunited 23 years later, only to go into the studio owned by the Neighborhoods' guitarist/vocalist David Minehan. The results are phenomenally great, only proving that had the rock & roll minefields not existed to stand in this juggernaut's way, Willie Alexander & the Boom Boom Band would have emerged as Boston's answer to the Rolling Stones, and then some. While there is new material here, the band doesn't shy away from recovering some of the music Alexander released after the split. "Oh Daddy Oh" from 1982's A Girl Like You album gets a driving new finish, while "Ogalala," originally issued on 1997's Persistence of Memory Orchestra CD, has a new perspective that gives Alexander the platform to go "loco," the stuff that made this group so irresistible in the first place. "Who Killed Deanna" from 1999's East Main Street Suite is one of the album's highlights -- the "Som-Som-Somerville" hook is haunting inside a true murder mystery that happened on the outskirts of Boston. That album also featured ...
