| | Dream Theater When Dream & Day Unite CD (1989) Germany; Originally Released in 1989
Bercy CD music
$13.95 WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. The band's originality does shine through on "Light Fuse and Get Away," "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun," and "Only a Matter of Time." The odd-meter measures and numerous time changes gave the group a complexity that hadn't been experienced for an entire decade in the rock genre. "YTSE Jam" was essentially their answer to Rush's "YYZ" and became a staple in the band's live set. The session was marred mostly by subpar singing, ...

| | Tommy Shaw Girls With Guns CD (1984)
Bercy music CDs
$10.85 Tommy Shaw's first solo project outside of Styx was a rather accomplished one, although neither the critics nor the charts would say so. Only the title track, a witty pop effort fueled by its excitable keyboard boisterousness and Shaw's high-pitched vocal gust broke the Top 40, edging in at number 33. While the album only made it to number 50 on the charts, it enabled Shaw to perform for the first time without DeYoung's influence, drawing more attention to his style of guitar-infused rock with a punch. The songs on Girls With Guns are invigorating and guitar savvy, while even the ballads are a refreshing change from the mawkish love song gushiness (with "Babe" and "Don't Let It End" being prime examples) of Styx. Tracks such as "Come In and Explain" and "Outside in the Rain" are far from commonplace rock, thanks to the elevating keyboard work from Peter Wood and Shaw's colorful guitar riffs that never stop moving. "Lonely School" is a well-written ballad with direction, and both "Kiss Me Hello" and "Fading Away" unveil Shaw's creativity ...

$20.09 Pianist, composer, and arranger Martial Solal has long deserved to be better known and more widely appreciated by American audiences. When in 2008 the Dreyfus label reissued two superb Solal albums on one disc, Westerners were given yet another chance to sit up and take notice of this man's amazing artistry. In & Out was recorded in July 2000 with expatriate Chicago-born ...
| | No Scope Hindsight 2012 CD (2009)
Bercy CD music
$12.65 What’s in a name? To many, a name is a label for a human, thing, place, product (as in a brand name) and even an idea or concept, normally used to distinguish one from another. The name “No Scope” however, can imply many things. Perhaps the name can reference a skillful shooting of a sniper rifle without the use of a scope. Or the conundrum presented by not having mouthwash, or the inability to gaze upon the cosmos. To the band No Scope, the name implies one idea: getting pwned. What is getting “pwned” you might ask? Pwn or pwned, is a slang term that implies domination and/or humiliation of a rival. It sprang from the similar term "owned" and is used primarily to taunt an opponent that has just been soundly defeated. Examples include "pwnage" or "you just got pwned". No Scope’s goal however as a performance group of musicians is not one to wish harm upon its loyal fans, as in the term “pwned” for defeat. Rather, it’s one of entertainment and fun, meaning that while at a No Scope venue, you sufficiently got pwned; either head-banging, dancing or singing along and had a blast. Emerging from the western Fort Worth region, No Scope’s determination to pwn others strives from trying to bring an alternative-metal sound that fans have said make No Scope sound like similar artists such as Slipknot, Mudvayne, Snot, Puddle of Mudd and many other bands. In a competitive area where many others bands aim to be the heaviest and baddest attitude bands, No Scope mixes a fine blend ...
