Various Dancehall
$19.59 Recorded between 1976 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Rob Kenner.
Can't Stop a Man collects some of Beres Hammond's biggest Jamaican hits, beginning with his first, "One Step Ahead" from 1976, a song produced by Willie Lindo. Moving chronologically through to 2003's sweet and infectious "Dancehall Vibes," which features Big Youth and is one of the highlights here, this two-disc set is a wonderful introduction to this woefully underappreciated singer and writer. With a voice that combines Marvin Gaye's subtle phrasing, Sam Cooke's easy charm, and the soulful power of a David Ruffin, Hammond has a talent for graceful, easy-flowing lovers rock, but he has also effortlessly managed to work light dancehall and hip-hop elements into his work, giving him an uncommon longevity in the ever-shifting sea of styles that is the trademark of Jamaican music. Key tracks here include "Last War," "Who Say" (with Buju Banton),"Sugar ...
| | Fury Of The Aquabats CD (1997)
Various Dancehall
$11.99 The Aquabats' second album, The Fury of the Aquabats fulfills the promise of their debut, offering an infectious collection of ska-punk. Although the group's songwriting is a little uneven, and they have the tendency to wallow in sophomoric, "wacky" humor, they have enough hooks and energy to satisfy ska junkies. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Additional personnel includes: Blake Handler (piano); Ikie Owens (keyboards); Parker LeGrand Jacobs, Bill Hardie, Patrick McDonald (background vocals).

| | Skankin Pickle Green Album CD (1996)
Various Dancehall
$9.25 Skankin' Pickle have pay homage to their influences on The Green Album. Each member of the band has a paragraph in the liner notes on their chosen cover. The guitarist praises "Gates of Steel" (Devo), the sax player chooses Bad Manners' "Special Brew," while the perceptive slide trombonist opts for the Bad Brains' "Pay To Cum." The valve trombonist hear something special in Oingo Boingo's "Violent Love," the drummer nods to Stewart Copeland with "Don't Care" and the bassist finds foundation ...
| | King Tubby Dangerous Dub CD (1996) (Import) United Kingdom
Various Dancehall
$10.39 The eight-piece Roots Radics are an influential instrumental group who helped pioneer the '80s dancehall style of reggae and provided accompaniment for some of the genre's greatest practitioners, including Bunny Wailer and Gregory Isaacs. This collection takes tracks by Roots Radics and filters them through the combined mixing skills of both Jah Screw and King Tubby, masters of the style and legends to fans of reggae and dub.
Hailed as an "original dub classic," this collection has achieved legendary status. It brims with all the hallmarks of dub: the rock-solid bass and drums over which float echoed, repeated shards of guitar, keyboards, and horns. This set includes no vocals whatsoever. The art of dub music comes in the artful juxtaposition of various sonic elements on top of the rhythm. The opening track, "Country Gal Dub," typifies the set. Built on a rock-solid rhythm track of just drum and bass, it is sprinkled with just a scratchy percussive effect, a touch of keyboard, and a sinewy guitar line, all doused in a liberal ...
| | Beres Hammond (1985) CD (1992)
Various Dancehall
$9.69 A nifty little album of lovers rock, Beres Hammond is as unassuming as its title and steady throughout, with Beres Hammond's wise, soulful singing giving these songs a tremendous sincerity. Recorded in 1992 and produced by guitarist Willie Lindo, the album features some impressive backup, including the Tamlins on harmonies, Gladstone Anderson on piano, horn man Dean Fraser, the Sly & Robbie rhythm section, and guitarist Dwight Pinkney. Highlights include "Teeny Weeny Little Lovin'" (kind of a dumb title, but the song works in spite of it), "Lovely Day," and "If Only I Knew," although everything here ...

| | Big Youth Live At Reggae Sunsplash (1984)
Various Dancehall
$9.89 Studio albums do little to shed light on the true value of an artist as a performer. Sitting in a recording booth belting out rehearsed tunes in relative privacy has a different affect on an artist than singing that same song in front of thousands of on-lookers, especially at a place where expectations run high, like Reggae Sunsplash.
Reggae Sunsplash is Jamaica's most revered music series for reggae music. All of the greats, including Bob Marley, have performed at one time or another, and it certainly isn't the correct forum to give a lackluster performance. So Big Youth delivered, and the crowd's many bursts of joy that occur throughout this disc are proof enough of his abilities.
A beautiful epic version of "I Pray Thee/Satta Amasagana" serves as the opening track. In "Jim Squeechy," Youth chants his admiration for John Coltrane ...
