Can't Stop a Man collects some of Beres Hammond's biggest Jamaican hits, beginning with his first, "One Step Ahead" from 1976, a song produced by Willie Lindo. Moving chronologically through to 2003's sweet and infectious "Dancehall Vibes," which features Big Youth and is one of the highlights here, this two-disc set is a wonderful introduction to this woefully underappreciated singer and writer. Studio albums do little to shed light on the true value of an artist as a performer. Sitting in a recording booth belting out rehearsed tunes in relative privacy has a different affect on an artist than singing that same song in front of thousands of on-lookers, especially at a place where expectations run high, like Reggae Sunsplash.
Reggae Sunsplash is Jamaica's most revered music series for reggae music. All of the greats, including Bob Marley, have performed at one time or another, and it certainly isn't the correct forum to give a lackluster performance. So Big Youth delivered, and the crowd's many bursts of joy that occur throughout this disc are proof enough of his abilities.
