The News
$13.59 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato driven. The quite capable pianist John DiMartino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo ring out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. A program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professional to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
The News
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the ...
| | Al Jarreau This Time CD (1980)
The News
$6.15 Al Jarreau finally found success in the U.S. after 1975's We Got By. The later albums that followed ,like 1977's live Look to the Rainbow and 1978's All Fly Home found him attaining the all-important cult status and accolades from the jazz community. Those facts made his switch to pop/R&B on This Time even more surprising. For This Time, Jarreau is paired with producer Jay Graydon. Despite his jazz credentials, This Time does prove that this style is where Jarreau truly prospers. The jittery ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
The News
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at ...

| | Grant Green Alive! CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
The News
$11.45 Recorded live at the Cliche Lounge, Newark, New Jersey on August 15, 1970. Originally released on Blue Note (84360). Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance and Bob Belden.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kurt Lundvall.
Recorded live in 1970 at the ClichT Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, ALIVE! is Grant Green at his funkiest. Often spurned by critics in his late period for selling out, Green churns out burning riffs and fiery solos on this date, regardless of style. Also making significant contributions to the date are the exceptional organists Neal Creque and Ronnie Foster, saxophonist Claude Bartee, vibraphonist William Bivens, and the irrepressible Idris Muhammad on drums. Whether its raging funk, dreamy Latin, or down-home soul, Green and his men perform with style and flare that is unsurpassed.
Many tracks will be familiar to listeners as the band covers a good many pop songs like Kool & The Gang's "Let The Music Take Your Mind" and the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing." While this may seem unforgivable to some, Green's stunningly expressive renditions of Creque's "Time To Remember" and Herbie Hancock's classic "Maiden Voyage" should dissuade all doubts as to where the music was coming from. Sadly, most tracks are faded out before the club's patrons applauded, but plenty of cheers were captured as individual band introductions were made. Indeed, applause was warranted as Green was still in command of his highly regarded style.
Alive! is the hardest funk LP Grant Green recorded during the later phase of his career, capturing a storming gig at Newark's Cliché Lounge. The sweaty club atmosphere adds something to the music that's difficult to pin down, yet unmistakably present -- a certain organic quality that isn't as noticeable on Green's studio albums of the time. Moreover, Green sounds more like the captain of his ship, with greater assurance in his musical direction and more strut on the R&B material. Drummer Idris Muhammad is a monster in this live setting, and he helps push Green (plus the rest of the band, which includes organist Ronnie Foster) even farther with his kinetic, continually evolving funk rhythms. That's especially true on the swaggering Kool & the Gang cover "Let the Music Take Your Mind," but Don Covay's "Sookie, Sookie" ...
