The three-piece Perplexa creates a few fascinating instrumental tones -- their constructions of atmospheric tones, low organ buzzes, and drifting guitar touches with the e-bowed feel of David Sylvian pulse beautifully along through dynamically slow builds, crests, and decrescendoes. Perplexa has a few lamentably "proggy" moments -- the desert-rock of "Desert" sounds like a problematic Thin White Rope track -- but the group's dreamier compositions certainly make up for the occasional misstep. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

| | Beth Gibbons Out Of Season CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Perplexa music CDs
$11.49 Boldly eclectic, warm, and organic, OUT OF SEASON finds Portishead vocalist Beth Gibbons collaborating with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb (aka Rustin Man). Also featuring multi-instrumentalist Adrian Utley (Portishead) and drummer Lee Harris (Talk Talk), the album recalls both of these revered ensembles at times, but largely wanders down its own path, thanks to Gibbons and Webb's adventurous vision.
Beginning with the gorgeously angelic "Mysteries," OUT OF SEASON showcases Gibbons's range, as the British singer deftly shifts from a melodramatic croon (the smoldering "Tom the Model") to a spot-on Billie Holiday impersonation (the string-laden "Romance") to a forlorn whisper (the melancholy "Drake," a fitting tribute to doomed folkie Nick Drake). Showered with superlatives upon its U.K. release, this stunning record is a rare example of a work of art living up to its hype, and is highly recommended.
Out of Season plays to Beth Gibbons' strengths as a vocalist and songwriter more than anything released prior by ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Perplexa songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical peaks, seemingly overcome with emotion as his wavering voice, which often recalls Violent ...
| | Lanterna Desert Ocean CD (2006)
Perplexa album
$11.15 Lanterna is the name for the atmospheric instrumental project of guitarist Henry Frayne. Like Frayne's previous work, DESERT OCEAN has an expansive, cinematic feel to it, with layers of guitars, synthesizers, and drums creating a soothing, evocative sound that could easily be used as a soundtrack to an IMAX film. Listeners may be given to visions of cloud formations moving in time-lapse over vast natural landscapes.
Frayne clearly has a diverse, sophisticated ear, so it is not surprising to here the influence of U2's The Edge or jazz eclectic Bill Frisell in his playing. Yet Lanterna's music is of a piece: organic, moody, and highly suggestive, making DESERT OCEAN a sonic experience potentially pleasing to fans of rock, jazz, ambient, or even new age.
Lanterna Desert Ocean Desert Ocean is Lanterna's 5th album and the first release on Badman's new instrumental label Jemez Mountain. Lanterna's previous releases Elm ...

| | Artie Shaw At The Hollywood Palladium CD (1997)
Perplexa songs
$13.39 Although there are many releases featuring radio broadcasts from Artie Shaw's very popular 1939 orchestra, relatively few exist from his next two bands, the outfits from 1940 and 1941. This particular recording shows just how creative the writing was for his string orchestras. Billy Butterfield, Hot Lips Page, Jack Jenney and Georgie Auld are among the many soloists, and there is one rare small-group live version ...
| | Slim Gaillard Absolute Voutest! '46 CD (1998)
Perplexa album
$13.49 Recorded live at Billy Berg's club, Hollywood, California in 1946.
All tracks have been digitally remastered by John R.T. Davies.
Slim Gaillard had a strong cult following in the mid-1940s for his brand of swing, jive and eccentric comedy, which involved his own language. This set from Hep mostly consists of a live performance at Billy Berg's in June 1946 with Slim on piano and guitar, bassist Bam Brown (who plays a comic foil for Gaillard) and drummer Leo Watson; in addition, there are the soundtracks from two soundies filmed around that era with Scat Man Carruthers ...
| | Philosopher's Stone Apparatus CD (1999)
Perplexa CD music
$13.85 Gareth Mitchell's second album in the Philosopher's Stone guise continues in the vein of the first, with the Amp musician creating a series of mysterious and often-muffled collages of feedback and textures over the course of an hour. The songs generally are longer on this release than on Preparation, relying more on individual parts being linked together instead of combined in overdubs. "Snake," with its shift from the core hum to what sounds like a rattle of glass beads to a final high, brief drone, is as representative of the album as anything ...
