A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke on Fender Rhodes with help from the exquisite if understated electric guitar work from Dwight Sills. Too Marvelous for Words compiles 12 highlights from John Hammond's late-'50s recordings of Count Basie and his band for Vanguard. Hammond didn't specifically record Basie, who only appears on four tracks on this compilation. Instead, he assembled various members of Basie's band, had them run through familiar items of their repertoire, adding a couple of stray songs and originals along the way. Since these recordings were made in the late '50s, when all of the members (apart from the odd newcomer, such as Kenny Burrell) were well established, these sessions aren't as revelatory as many of Hammond's blues and folk recordings, which had the wondrous element of discovery. Tim Armacost's second release on the Double-Time label is solidly within the post-bop mainstream, yet uncommonly ambitious. Any young tenor player who dares to tackle as grand a composition as John Coltrane's "Crescent" is aiming high. No less bold is his decision to open the album with "Body and Soul," a proving ground for tenor saxophonists since Coleman Hawkins put it on the map in 1939 (and Coltrane reinvented it in 1960). Armacost handles these challenges well, bookending "Crescent" with turbulent rubato passages (hats off to drummer Billy Hart) and taking "Body and Soul" at an easy 3/4 clip. His own compositions are intelligent and varied: "Sustenance" and "Special Delivery" are brisk and burning, "Black Sand Beach" is a well-crafted ballad, and the title track is a peppy samba. His playing is passionate and strikingly mature, and as an up-and-coming jazzer, he couldn't have asked for better sidemen than Billy Hart, bassist Ray Drummond, and pianist Bruce Barth. While The Wishing Well doesn't quite have the raw energy of 1998's Live at Small's (even though it was also recorded live, in Holland), it is still a fine offering from a fine musician. ~ David R. One of the more immediately accessible recordings by the Chicago Underground Trio, Slon captures even more facets of this ever-evolving and always intriguing group. The album opens with a nice exercise for Rob Mazurek's cornet, titled "Protest," in which the trio members hammer away live in the studio for a minute and a half before they introduce overdubs to pit time signatures against one another and raise the tension of the piece.
