His Majesty Swinging Nephews songs Improving upon the original LP in Dragon's Lars Gullin series by adding an additional four-song session, this CD features the legendary Swedish baritonist with four different groups from the 1955-1956 period, ranging from a quartet to an octet and featuring trumpeter Chet Baker on four numbers. Earl Hines Hines '74 CD
His Majesty Swinging Nephews album for sale Pianist Earl Hines had an illustrious career, ranging from his groundbreaking work with Louis Armstrong in the late '20s to some of his grandest of solo piano dates in the '70s. In between, the Pennsylvania native kept busy fronting one of the most sophisticated and popular big bands in the '30s and by later working in a variety of combo settings for club, concert, and studio engagements. Fortunately, Hines enjoyed cutting solo discs, and there are several fine examples in circulation. This particular was cut in London during a 1965 European tour. Taking in a variety of standards, a few obscure numbers, and even some original material, Hines displays the full range of his keyboard mastery, all in the context of his signature high-end stride style. Highlights include a sprightly "I Know That You Know" and an easy rolling "My Blue Heaven." He also works his introspective magic on a fine ballad version of "My Serenade in Blue." And, along with two excellent and expansive originals ("Hunting," "Hines '65"), Hines offers up some playful vocal turns on "If I Could Be With You" and Peggy Lee's "I Don't Know Enough About You." Maybe not as essential as his later Tour de Force solo albums, but still a fine disc for fans. ~ Stephen Cook

Thomas Lehn Bart CD (2000)
His Majesty Swinging Nephews buy CD music Analog synthesizer wizard Thomas Lehn meets studio producer/digital synth improviser Marcus Schmickler. Both played together within MIMEO, a 12-piece electronic orchestra, but this was their first recording session as a duo. The two musicians first improvised freely, then the material was transformed in postproduction. The resulting music, full of chirps, beeps, and tweeps, is a strange mixture of free improvisation (see Lehn's CD Tom & Gerry with drummer Gerry Hemingway or his trio Konk Pack with Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner) and electroacoustics. Actually, it sounds like a piece of musique concrète that has lost its chart -- the plan being electroacoustics without the "cinema for the ear" (except maybe for the half-hour long "De Funktion," which feels more organized). Quite exciting and destabilizing, Bart will surprise even the most hardcore Lehn fan; intertwined with Schmickler's, his art never sounded this rich. On the other hand, it partly lacks an organic quality (usually reflected or enhanced by the presence of more acoustic instruments). If anything, Bart takes electronic improvisation one step further. ~ François Couture
Personnel: Thomas Lehn (synthesizer); Marcus Schmickler (synthesizer, programming).
