| | Andy Laster Interpretations Of Lessness CD - Import Andy Laster Discography of CDs
If you can judge someone by the company he keeps, then Andy Laster is top-notch all the way. This quartet is entirely different than his Hydra quintet, yet the quality of the group is just as impressive. Here, he drops the electric guitar and substitutes Erik Friedlander on cello for Drew Gress' bass. The higher-pitched stringed instrument is totally effective, especially in the hands of Friedlander. Cuong Vu plays trumpet, and he is excellent, although it is hard to measure up to Herb Robertson. Kenny Wollesen rounds out the group on percussion, where his sensitive playing fits nicely. Like its predecessor, this recording relies greatly on Laster's awesome compositional skills, which exceed the quality of his own fine improvisations. The disappointingly short recording time (less than 45 minutes) is a shame, considering the eminently accessible layered textures and excellent solos. ~ Steve Loewy

| | Orange Then Blue While You Were Out CDs (1992)
Interpretations Of Lessness CD music
$12.79 A transitional album can sometimes be a band's most exciting effort, representing fresh ideas, the taking on of new blood, or perhaps just the beginning of a door closing on one phase and opening on another. Orange Then Blue's double-CD opus While You Were Out is one such album, standing as a final document of the group's years as a Boston-based ensemble and presenting the first inkling of its soon-to-emerge status as an outlet for many of the top musicians on the New York downtown jazz scene. Led by drummer/composer George Schuller (son of Gunther), OTB started in 1984 as a group of young musicians who were receiving their jazz educations in Boston. By the time this fifth OTB album was recorded in 1992, the band was poised to shift operations to New York City under George Schuller's continued leadership. And as the decade progressed, band members like reedmen Matt Darriau and Chris Speed, trumpeter Cuong ...

$21.69 The Mosaic Sextet resembles a cross between a classical chamber ensemble and a free-jazz workshop. Though it rarely performs live, and records even less frequently, the ensemble has been together since 1987. The band's out-of-print first recording, 1988's TODAY, THIS MOMENT, is included on this double-disc set, along with a full disc ...
| | Ran Blake Sonic Temples CDs (2001) (Import)
Interpretations Of Lessness songs
$25.05 Principally recorded at The Sonic Temple, Roslindale, Massachussetts in 2000 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Gunther Schuller.
There are few pianists -- or jazz musicians, period -- who straddle the line between form and free playing better than Ran Blake. As both composer and an interpreter of the canon, Blake dances with grace and aplomb. This set with George Schuller on drums and percussion and Ed Schuller on bass is a double CD that celebrates Blake in a rare trio setting. Usually he is heard either solo or duo, and rarely with a rhythm section of any kind. Disc one opens with three standards -- "Tangerine," "Nature Boy," and "Black Coffee" -- before visiting one of Blake's classics, "The Short Life of Barbara Monk." On all four of these selections, Blake leads the trio with an intimacy that comes out of a search for the perfect set of timbres (sonorities) ...

Interpretations Of Lessness album
$13.19 Recorded during a string of concerts staged to commemorate John Zorn's 50th birthday, ELECTRIC MASADA captures the plugged-in variation of Zorn's acoustic, avant-Klezmer jazz quartet. Regular members Dave Douglas (trumpet) and Greg Cohen (bass) are absent here, with bassist Trevor Dunn admirably filling Cohen's position. Zorn's alternately lyrical and aggressive alto saxophone playing is still front and center, as are Joey Baron's dazzlingly polyrhythmic drum patterns. Rounding out the ensemble are guitarist Marc Ribot, keyboardist Jamie Saft, percussionists Kenny ...
