(11 Customer Reviews)
Over the course of his last several albums, the legendary guitarist Joe Satriani has established himself as the poet laureate of heavy metal guitarists, a canny stylist with a rare gift for eliciting lyrical nuances from a wall of distortion and feedback. With the support of a skin tight funk-metal ensemble, Satriani unleashes his fiery range of moods, although on a ballad like "Cryin'" his orchestrations are poignantly tasteful. Balancing blazing hellbent phrasing with carefully wrought arrangements, THE EXTREMIST charts bold new directions for instrumental rock.
The Extremist lives up to its name, continuing Joe Satriani's tradition of exploring new musical and compositional ground. A vastly different array of musicians assists him in creating the songs displayed on this all-instrumental disc, and as such the songs are different from even the usual envelope-pushing Satriani fare. The chugging "Summer Song," the warm "Friends," the slamming "Motorcycle Driver," and the crunching "The Extremist" show Satriani's talents as a guitarist are undiminished, while the more traditional neo-folk approach to "Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness" and the bluesy "New Blues" are different from anything he has done before. So, too, is the droning rock of "War" and the plaintive, questioning funk-rock of "Why." ~ Phil Carter

Extremist music CDs
$15.59 Most of Fra Lippo Lippi's catalog is own by Virgin, but leader Rune Kristoffersen still holds the rights to the group's first two LPs, In Silence (1981) and Small Mercies (1983). Both are integrally reissued here as part of a CD filled to the rim, the first release on Rune Arkiv, a sub-label of Kristoffersen's own, Rune Grammofon. The rift between these two albums and Fra Lippo Lippi's later more mainstream outings has been stressed elsewhere. As is, this collection (which also includes two B-side tracks from 1982, "In a Little Room" and "An Idea") offers a nice epochal slab of Gothic-pop. Bauhaus and The Stranglers obviously had a strong influence on Kristoffersen (guitar, keyboards, bass, and vocals) and Morten Sjoberg (drums), especially on the debut album, oddly presented after their sophomore on this CD. The acoustic, cavernous drums and skeleton-like electric guitar give songs like "Recession," "Quiet," and "Out of the Ruins" a resolutely gloomy feel. For In Silence, the duo added a more charismatic lead singer in Per Oystein Sorensen, while Kristoffersen focused mainly on keyboards, and the drums became clinical-sounding (ha, new wave production values), resulting in less claustrophobic ...
| | I Am The Resurrection: A Tribute To John Fahey CD (2006)
Extremist songs
$15.05 The late John Fahey was to fingerpickers (or simply "pickers") what Jimmy Smith was to soul-jazz/hard bop organ -- Fahey, in other words, wrote the book on fingerpicking, an earthy, rootsy, instrumental style of folk-rock acoustic guitar playing. And just as Smith influenced countless organists, the seminal Fahey was a musical guru for Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho, Stefan Grossman, Duck Baker, Peter Lang, Michael Gulezian, and many other acoustic guitar-playing instrumentalists who surfaced in the '60s and '70s. Given his impact on folk-rock, Fahey is well deserving of a tribute -- especially from fingerpickers. But the interesting thing about this Fahey tribute compilation, I Am the Resurrection: A Tribute to John Fahey, is the fact that it isn't dominated by fingerpickers and Fahey disciples. The songs are familiar -- at least if one is heavily into Fahey's work -- but what the artists do to them are not. Hearing Peter Case (formerly of the Plimsouls) on "When the Catfish Is in Bloom," Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth fame) on "The Singing Bridge of Memphis, Brooklyn Bridge Version: The Coelcanth," or the Fruit Bats on "Death of the Clayton Peacock" is a lot like hearing rock en español artists saluting ...
