The two producers who are Deep Forest are folklorists with keyboards and samplers and visions of one world. Instead of traveling back-country roads and recording native singers on their home turf, they comb the world of recorded music and sample the natives; and instead of presenting them as they are, they mix and match them and supply the beats themselves. Following a debut that was based on Pygmy music from Central Africa, BOHEME scans the landscape of Eastern Europe and Asia for the exotic sounds of throat singing, cantorial chanting and Hungarian folk melodies. Add in ambient dance tracks and keyboards blips, and you have Tuvan techno.
The star voice on BOHEME belongs to Transylvanian singer Marta Sebestyen, whose records are sampled on some tracks and who sings directly on others. On "Bulgarian Melody," the producers drop out the beats altogether to showcase her mesmerizing, folk-ish throat singing. "Deep Folk Song" is a sprightly, accordion-based folk dance, spiced with high, otherwordly vocal chants; it tips the balance, momentarily, away from techno and toward the local culture. "Cafe Europa" stretches the album's landscape to include an American Indian chant, and the seamless way it merges into the techno beat suggest Deep Forest's true message: that two very different local cultures might just be parts of one much bigger culture.
Much like Deep Forest's debut album, Boheme is a combination of club music and worldbeat. While the album is certainly danceable, it works better as trance-inducing mood music, although it isn't quite as consistent as the debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Q (8/95, p.119) - 3 Stars - Good - "...BOHEME....[features a] greater emphasis on East European musics. If it's cultural tourism, then the scenery is very pretty. Heart-stopping melodies abound even if the Euro-rock arrangements recall Jean-Michel Jarre's designer banalities..." Boheme Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Drop-dead Gorgeous. This is a 'drop-dead' gorgeous album, full of rich melody, deep emotion, and constant sonic surprise. You can let it wash over you like a reverie, listen intently on a high-res system (how low does that bass go!)or dance around the house in an old pair of undies, full of the joy of existence. Just get it ,o.k. Submitted by David Martin (Mt. Martha, Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Deep Forest Boheme This is the second album by Deep Forest. Now this album isn't one of my favorites, but it has an amazing track list, the best of this album is Martha's Song. But still the first album(Deep Forest) and the third album(Deep Forest III Comparsa) are better. But hey Deep Forest Boheme did win a Grammy Award for Best World Music. So this album is worth checking out. 3/5. Submitted by Sam (United States) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Exotic Album!! A cultural cd for those who really love this kind of music!! Submitted by Jorge Nazur (tucuman, ARGENTINA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Track 2 is HOT I keep listening to track 2 (bohemian ballet), it makes you feel like your in another world, the way the song starts. It has nice deep low end bass which can be "felt" from a good system. Their first album, Deep Forest, is best though. Submitted by a reviewer (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Boheme
$11.15 LE ROI EST MORT, VIVE LE ROI was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album and for Best Recording Package.
On its third album, Enigma reshapes the most interesting aspects of its previous two into a distinctly different atmosphere. ENIGMA3 has tangible Indonesian influences, as did 1994's THE CROSS OF CHANGES; it also smoothly and dramatically incorporates Gregorian chant, ...

$11.59 On THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma delves into the mystic with a musical fervor that transcends sampling technologies and popular dance beats. THE CROSS OF CHANGES is a serene yet supremely sensual musical synthesis that might best be characterized as new age hip-hop. Enigma's worldwide hit MCMXC A.D. was notable for, among other things, its use of Gregorian chants as samples in a heady techno mix, which inspired such delirious interest in this ancient music that The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos are currently enjoying their own Top 10 hit--CHANT.
With THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma's auteur Michael Cretu has merged a series of chants and simple devotional lyrics into a smooth techno-psychedelic wall of sound that is, in contemporary terms, a synthesized flipside to the techno-pop dance grooves of groups like Ace Of Base. Apples and oranges? Certainly, but both groups do employ texture and repetition to particular advantage in a pop context. However, where Ace Of Base finds nirvana in the incantory rhythms of reggae and the classic textures of old-fashioned analog synthesizers, ...

Boheme
$11.49 Perhaps this is what a techno artist would create to incite monks to dance: innocent grooves, sacred texts. Until, there enters another breathy, sensual woman with sultry French talk. By now there's a compelling dance groove, which builds for a few minutes, then finally plateaus into a space filled with dripping sounds where the beat is kept afloat by the rhythmic panting ...
| | Deep Forest Comparsa CD (1998) Enhanced CD
Boheme
$10.25 Deep Forest emerged in as a unique phenomenon in the '90s, employing the ambient musical techniques established in the '70s and '80s, but with an added twist. Using natural sounds and souped-up technology to create something of a world-music/ambient/techno fusion, Deep Forest captured the imagination and ears of millions of listeners. COMPARSA represents not a departure so much as a strengthening of position. Deep Forest finds those elements of their sound that speak most directly to the listener and expands on them to fine effect. Fans of their music will be slightly surprised at some of the new timbres and rhythms on COMPARSA, but they will certainly ...

| | Shane Alexander Stargazer CD (2006) (Import)
Boheme
$18.55 L.A.-based solo artist Shane Alexander is back with Stargazer, the follow up album to his critically acclaimed 2005 independent release, The Middle Way. The new album, produced by Heroes & Villains, features some of Los Angeles most respected musicians Charlie Paxon (James Blunt, Colin, Hay, Anastasia) on drums, Billy Mohler (Macy Gray, Liz Phair, Herbie Hancock) on bass, Krister Axel on piano, Chris Pierce on harmonica, and veteran session ace Kim Bullard (Tori Amos, Goo Goo Dolls, David Crosby, Eddie Money) on Hammond organ. Stargazer--recorded in only four days--was tracked mostly live using vintage gear. The result is a rich, timeless sound. The vocals and songwriting on Stargazer convey a real sense of honesty. On "Spaces In Between", the album's opening track, Shane muses that little spaces in between I find, are all thats left of all my time, trying to make each moment last. The Moore Hotel is a beautiful and melancholy song written while fighting insomnia in a lonely Seattle hotel room; it brings images of lonely walks and sleepless nights to life. Front Porch Serenade, the albums closer, is a classic love song recorded live with only acoustic guitar, piano and heartfelt vocals that leaves the listener with a lump in their throat.Formerly the front man for the rock band Damone, Alexander took the solo path immediately following Damones 2003 disbanding. Soon after, Shane released his self-produced, self-titled EP, featuring simple acoustic and vocal production with dark strings and mandolin. Born in San Diego and raised in Maryland and Pennsylvania, Shane Alexander has forged a sound with firm rock roots, folk imagery, and intimate vocals that range from quiet whispers to soaring emotional phrases that take the listener on an evocative journey. Shane credits a lot of his musical ability to his non-musical father. "My Dad had an amazing record collection when I was growing up, and I really feel it was hearing such a wide array of great music that led me to my point of revelation that I was going to be a musician. I taught myself to play by jamming along with records and in doing so developed a strong sense of melody and the ability to improvise. It was a tumultuous time at home - my folks separated when I was young and my Dad remarried a few times. Nothing like family drama to make you want to hide in your room and play guitar." 2005 was a marquee year for Alexander, as he toured in the States and Europe, including opening slots with Jewel, John Hiatt and Peter Case. He also secured a distribution deal in Amsterdam with Lucky Dice Music. "The Open Road", the ...
