Like AC/DC and Midnight Oil, INXS were born of the Sydney surfer bar scene, a notoriously tough proving ground which required bands to get really good, really fast, and to rock out mightily in the process. Unlike those bands, however, this sextet were young and impressionable enough to be heavily influenced by British new wave and the odd art-rock antics of Australia-by-way-of-New Zealand cult heroes Split Enz.
As a result, INXS's 1980 debut is a mildly schizophrenic mix of edgy hard pop and quirky new wave. The best tracks are those which combine the two, such as the brilliant debut single "Just Keep Walking," a two-minute slice of snarling attitude and jagged melody. A few tracks fare slightly less well, but as a whole this is both an interesting slice of '80s new wave and a surprising historical find for INXS neophytes.
Personnel: Kirk Pengilly (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Jon Farriss (vocals, drums, percussion); John Farris (vocals, drums); Michael Hutchence, Gary Beers (vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar, synthesizer).
Recording information: Trafalgar Studios.

Inxs album
$14.54 As a director or as a musician, Rob Zombie shows no signs of closing the door on either of his creative endeavors anytime soon. Returning with his first album since 2006's Educated Horses, after several delays following this record's completion in 2008 -- due to his work on Halloween 2, lack of promotion, and time spent shopping for a new label after 18 years of recording for Geffen -- Zombie has since gone on to say that the songs on Hellbilly Deluxe 2 were his easiest to write. This could be because it was his first outing to include help from his bandmates (longtime touring comrades guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D, and drummer Tommy C) but it's probably more attributed to the fact that making songs like these is old hat by now. "Jesus Frankenstein," "Sick Bubblegum," and "Mars Needs Women" are the same schlocky grooves that made up his five previous solo records and six White Zombie records. His trademark "yeah" and monotone hoedown growl are still front and center, the B-horror movie references are still plentiful (Frankenstein, martians, witches, and two songs about werewolves), and the chugging ...

| | Best Of Sade CD (1994)
Inxs music CDs
$9.69 Digitally remastered by Tom Coyne (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Nigerian vocalist Sade Adu has carved out a cosmpolitan niche for herself over the past decade, gathering together elements of cool jazz, samba, reggae, funk and pop all under the pastoral umbrella of her suede-and-velvet voice. A pop stylist with a musical universe all her own, Sade has endured and matured over the past decade, seemingly unaffected by changes in taste ...

| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Inxs album
$9.09 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative ...

$10.49 Recorded between 1964 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Paul Grein.
Ultimate Petula Clark is a 21-track collection of British songbird Clark's biggest hits and best songs from the early '60s through the early '70s. Her sophisticated and warm voice was the perfect instrument for the songwriting talents of Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent; many of the songs here are written and produced by the underrated Hatch. The collection ...
| | Kylie Minogue Impossible Princess CD (1997) (Import) Import; Australia; + Bonus CD
Inxs music CDs
$21.19 By 1997, much of the pop music landscape had changed. The music papers were declaring the "Techno Revolution" was on, Oasis and Manic Street Preachers were ruling the charts, and simple dance-pop seemed to be the domain of teenage girls. So what does the dance-pop diva of the '90s do? She recruits Manic Street Preachers' James Dean Bradfield, Sean Moore, and Nicky Wire, starts writing unaided, and completely changes musical direction. Enter Kylie Minogue's Impossible Princess (the title was changed to Kylie Minogue after the death of Princess Diana). From the trippy cover art to the abundance of guitars and experimental vocal tracks, this was her "great leap forward." The move got her in the papers, but, unfortunately, critical acclaim was lacking (and so were sales). Critics called it a mistake, and the public was less than impressed. Which is sad, because this is a pretty damn good record. Unlike her early work, this album sounds stronger and has a more natural feel. Her songwriting abilities have come a long way, and Impossible Princess actually flows together as an album. Worth another look. ~ Chris True
Meant as a statement of her new direction, Kylie Minogue's fifth album no longer featured the Stock-Aitken-Waterman production gloss and found the diminutive singer working with hip dance producers like David Seaman. From the first notes of the opener "Confide in Me," you know this is not the ...
| | Billy Mackenzie Auchtermatic CD (2005) (Import) Import; United Kingdom
Inxs songs
$23.79 Part of the 2005 reissue series covering the last years of Billy Mackenzie's life, Auchtermatic bears a general resemblance to the earlier posthumous compilation Eurocentric as Transmission Impossible does to Beyond the Sun -- a resequenced and more specifically focused presentation of his work, in this case the electronic side as opposed to the torch/cabaret efforts. That said, Auchtermatic starts off with one of Mackenzie's most brawling, straight-ahead rockers ever, "Soul Jewel," a wake-up call that leads into a kaleidoscopic collection of songs. Half the album covers work with his key final collaborator, Steve Aungle, and at their songs' best Mackenzie plays off an off-kilter mania in the arrangements to good effect, thus the matter-of-gender subject matter in "Hornophobic" and, in a nod to another famous Scots-fronted band of the '80s, a techno rampage through Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again." Meanwhile, "The Soul That Sighs" is the dark gem, Mackenzie's warm, passionate performance mixed with a murky, tropicalia-in-the-shadows beat suggesting the impulses behind "No" and "Breakfast" refracted through the Bristol-centered cinema nightmares of Portishead or Massive Attack. What makes Auchtermatic a really stellar collection is the inclusion of many of his last collaborations with other artists, in some cases only released as singles or obscure albums. Besides the inclusion of one last bow with his longstanding musical compatriots in Yello -- "Norma Jean," the original, Marilyn Monroe-referencing version ...
