LOADED (THE FULLY LOADED EDITION) is a greatly expanded version of the Velvet Underground's 1970 album LOADED. Disc 1 includes the original album along with outtakes, demos and alternate mixes. Disc 2 - the "Alternate Album" - repeats the sequence of songs from the original album using demos and alternate versions, and adds more demos and outtakes from the same sessions.
Principally recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York in spring and summer 1970. Originally released on Cotillion (9034). INcludes liner notes by David Fricke.
LOADED was a fitting end for the mighty Velvet Underground. Lou Reed had penned an album seemingly packed with hits, but by now, four LPs into the Velvet's career, only a sad few record buyers appreciated the band. Resignation permeates the album. Reed's voice is noticeably ragged, and bassist Doug Yule ended up recording many of the vocals for the final mix. Drummer Moe Tucker was pregnant, and Yule's brother Billy sat in on drums for most of the sessions. This was no longer the art-rock Velvet Underground, but a far more accessible version, relying on Reed's songwriting over the band's overall musicality.
Yet LOADED is arguably VU's most immediately satisfying album. Less overtly experimental than any of their other releases, the record still overflows with hooks, churning grooves, and Lou Reed's irresistibly unique pop sensibility. In addition to the certifiable rock classics "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll" (which alone should elevate the album into the rock pantheon), there are shiny, ironic ditties ("Who Loves the Sun"), cool, folk-rocking groovers ("Cool It Down"), and beautiful, weary ballads ("Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"). LOADED shimmers and gleams for all of its finality. While the album closed the book on the Velvet Underground's life, it also solidified their significant niche in rock history.
LOADED was a fitting end for the mighty Velvet Underground. Lou Reed had penned an album seemingly loaded with hits, but by now, four LPs into the Velvets' career, a sad few record buyers appreciated the band. After recording the album, Reed called it quits and crawled to his parents' home in the suburbs--the ultimate anti-rock statement.
Resignation permeates the album. Reed's voice is noticeably ragged, and bassist Doug Yule ended up recording many of the vocals for the final mix. Drummer Moe Tucker was pregnant, and Yule's brother Billy sat in on drums for most of the LOADED sessions, further alienating Reed from the already disintegrating band.
This was no longer the art-rock Velvet Underground, but a far more accessible version, relying on Reed's songwriting over the band's overall musicality. Accordingly, the songs are either retreats into the faux innocence of parental ideals ("Head Held High"), or autobiographical pieces of teenage rebellion ("Sweet Jane"). "Rock & Roll," for instance, reads like text-book angst, where everything your parents do is, well, "it ain't happening at all."
The album appropriately sounds like Reed's final bit of energy for the band. There's the saddened tone of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'," in which the heroes walk with their "head[s] down," and "New Age," in which they mingle with "over the hill" movie stars. LOADED closed a chapter in Lou Reed'

Velvet Underground Loaded Songs Loaded Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The Yule/Reed Underground not much i can say that hasn't already been said about the most ersatz, experimental Rock band of the Sixties, except that:
"Loaded" is the VU's most eclectic, pop-driven album with songs that have varied musical influences and somewhat mirror and foreshadow music like the Grateful Dead ("Cool It Down", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "Train Round The Bend"), The Stones ("Head Held High") and even the Beatles ("Who Loves The Son").
i found "New Age" to be the most intriguing and emotionally engaging song on the album, while "I Found A Reason" to be slightly perplexing.
the two major hits on the album are "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll", worth playing over and over, but a decision was made to cut the last (and best!) three minutes off "Sweet Jane";
to which i curse Warner/Cotillion/Mike Curb to have a perpetual wedgie, heh heh...
my favorites on "Loaded" are "Sweet Jane", "Rock & Roll" and "Oh! Sweet Nothin' ".
definitely the most accessible of their albums to new listeners. Submitted by astronomius (So. California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Half Pretty Good, Half Embarrasingly Bad I'm sorry folks, I love the Velvets, but this is NOT a Velvet Underground album. This is a Lou Reed & Doug Yule album, and even Lou has admitted his regrets. Sure it's got the gems Rock & Roll, Sweet Jane, Train Round the Bend (& I guess Cool it Down is pretty good). But then there are "I Found a Reason", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" ,"Oh Sweet Nuthin" . . . these are just plain bad, and -- supposedly from the same band that brought us "I Heard Her Call My Name" -- embarrasing! A Loaded Sound The fourth EP from the Velvet's is with out question one their best. Reed with his introspective poetic style, has throughtout his career in the Velvet's paythed the way for post-punk, and indie bands. With the first track "Who loves the son" sounding like a mid-beatles sound, while other songs "head held high" sound more like The Clash. The album has a solid quilit throughout it, and is as diverse as the Velvet's can get. The album finish's with "Oh sweet nuthin'" where Sterling Morrison's talent on the guitar shows through in a spectacular way. To me it's a shame that one most influential band of all time can be so undiscovered to most. If your someone who likes the Zeppelin's, Beatles, Stones, Floyd's, Doors, then The Velvet Underground's Loaded won't let you down. $8.19 Velvet Underground's self-titled third album seemed like the debut of a new band. John Cale had left (replaced by Doug Yule) and the group became, for all intents and purposes, Lou Reed's back-up band. The songs actually sounded like rock music and John Cale's screeching musicality was reworked into songs that featured Sterling Morrison's most eloquent guitar accompaniment.
Reed's songwriting moved beyond the armed-to-disarm approach of the previous two albums towards a spiritual level of empathy with the human race--a change that wouldn't go unnoticed. The man who once begged someone to "nullify [his] life" ("Heroin") was now asking "Jesus" to "help me find my proper place," and whooping his way through the equally inspiring "Beginning To See The Light." To this day, every song on VELVET UNDERGROUND sounds like a breakthrough.
In short, VELVET UNDERGROUND showcased the human side of Lou Reed's songwriting. Unobstructed by walls of sonic noise, Reed's insight and genius was finally allowed to shine through.
Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history; the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch within rock and roll's ...
| | Velvet Underground White Light/White Heat CD (1968)
Loaded music CDs
$6.65 WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT, the Velvet Underground's second album, is the band at their most calculated and perverse, but also shows another side. It is a glimpse of the more accessible rock which Lou Reed wrote, but wasn't fully comfortable with until the group's third album. WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT also introduced guitar sounds and production so abrasive that the feel wasn't duplicated until even punk had matured into New York's downtown art/noise scene nearly twenty years later.
WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT is an exhausting exercise in opposites. The aching beauty of "Here She Comes Now" features a delicate guitar melody and Reed's most innocent vocals since the debut's "Sunday Morning"; it sniffs around Lou's taste for ballads, but throws in the cruel "oh she looks so good/oh she's made out of wood" refrain for effect. The title track would even be playful if not for the instrumental speed rushes and vocal harmonies so discordant they're sinister. It also turns out to be a perfect primer for "Sister Ray," a depraved freak show of prostitutes, junkies and what happens when the cops come banging at the door. Musically, "Sister Ray" is a jarring guitar crash, clocking in at 17:25, fully showing the Velvet's musical ferociousness. ...

The antithesis of late-60s west coast idealism, New York's Velvet Underground represent the era's darker side. Lou Reed was a contract songwriter at Pickwick Records; John Cale, a classically trained child prodigy. Sterling Morrison had studied with Reed at Syracuse. Drummer Angus MacLise took the name 'Velvet Underground' from a paperback and was replaced by Maureen 'Mo' Tucker. In 1965, Andy Warhol invited them to join the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, and suggested adding actress/singer Nico. They recorded their debut album in 1966 but major labels feared its controversial content and long tracks. The Velvet Underground And Nico (1966) was eventually issued by MGM/Verve. Famous for Warhol's peel-off banana sleeve and his credit as producer, it introduced ...
