(3 Customer Reviews)
ZAIREEKA is a 4-CD limited edition release. Each CD contains the same 8 compositions intended for simultaneous playback on up to 4 CD players.
It would be an understatement to say that ZAIREEKA, the four-disc, experimental opus from Oklahoma City's resident post-punk geniuses the Flaming Lips, is not your run-of-the-mill release. Each disc has a partial mix of the same eight songs, so the only way to hear the album as intended is by using four different cd-players at once. Yet, as Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne hints at in the liner notes, that makes ZAIREEKA an inherently social event--invite some friends, tell 'em to bring extra boomboxes.
As for ZAIREEKA's music, it is an ambitious extension of the kind of psyche-noise-pop that the Flaming Lips have mastered since their mid-80s inception. Gloriously catchy moments--like the chugging rhythm of the opening "Okay I'll Admit It That I Really Don't Understand" or the serene ambient-pop air of "Thirty Five Thousand Feet Of Despair"--float out constantly, only to be eaten up within waves of sound. As pop music goes, ZAIREEKA's about as experimental a trip as you can lay on the average listener before they run for cover, but those who remain will find their stay extremely worthwhile.
Limited edition 4-CD set. Play all four at once. Standard double jewelcase 1997 release.

Recording information: Cassadaga, NY (04/1997-08/1997).Rolling Stone (12/11/97, p.78) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...ZAIREEKA's wall-of-surround-sound approach melds droning-rock dissonance with warped, off-kilter pop melodies, producing a totally immersing, post-PET SOUNDS seance..." Entertainment Weekly (11/14/97, p.93) - "...the Oklahoma quartet has placed the various components of ZAIREEKA's eight songs onto four CDs, ideally to be played simultaneously on four separate stereos....Whether human anatomy is equipped to handle octophonic sound is anyone's guess." - Rating: A Q (12/02, p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The effect is both thrilling and unsettling..." Magnet (1-2/98, p.69) - "...dense, catchy walls of sound that just happen to be emanating from eight speakers..." Mojo (Publisher) (3/01/04, p.56) - Included in Mojo's The 67 Lost Albums You Must Own! - "An intended fusion of 'anarchy and inspiration,' musically this was the Lips at their mind-melding zonk rock pinnacle..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.60) - "...Expensive, odd, but impressive if you get it to work." Mojo (Publisher) (p.52) - Ranked #11 in Mojo's "The 50 Most Out There Albums Of All Time" - "ZAIREEKA is one of the Lips' finest records. In its original format, it's nothing short of a psychedelic masterpiece..." NME (Magazine) (1/3/98, p.32) - 10 (out of 10) - "...even by the Flaming Lips' synapse-searing standards, ZAIREEKA is a tatanic, bedazzled trip to the furthest reaches of the imagination....the Flaming Lips have released arguably their most beautiful music....To reiterate: a work of genius." Zaireeka album
$6.29 HIT TO DEATH IN THE FUTURE HEAD is the fifth Flaming Lips album, was the first to be released by a major record label (Warner Brothers), and bears the subtitle "10 Solipsistic Soundtracks by the Flaming Lips"--a fantastically accurate description of the Lips' music in general. Solipsism is a theme that Wayne Coyne has consistently explored in his lyrics and that he and his revolving team of bandmates have addressed in ...

| | Flaming Lips Clouds Taste Metallic CD (1995)
Zaireeka music CDs
$8.95 CLOUDS TASTE METALLIC is the seventh Flaming Lips record, and it is a far looser and more relaxed affair than anything that preceded it. The weirdness flows out of head-Lip Wayne Coyne's head as it always has done, but this is a record by a band that no longer has ...
| | Flaming Lips Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg/Priest Driven Ambulance Album, Demos & Outtakes 1989-1991 CDs (2002)
Zaireeka songs
$15.85 2 CDs; The Priest Driven Ambulance Album, Demos And Outtakes & The Mushroom Tapes:1989-1991. 33 tracks total. This contains Discs 4 & 5 in the series. The album "Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid" (purchased separately) contains Discs 1, 2 & 3.
Nothing proves a band's ambitions, or probes its emotions (or both) quite like a concept album. So, after adding guitarist Jonathan Donahue and enlisting producer Dave Fridmann, the Flaming Lips focused on Wayne Coyne's ongoing quest for metaphysical enlightenment to record their first great album, In a Priest Driven Ambulance. The contributions of Donahue and Fridmann were immediately apparent, the duo appearing simultaneously as supremely fitting voices to frame Coyne's brilliantly shambling lyrics and sun-scorched delivery. The songs improved as well, ranging from the freak-out epic "Unconsciously ...

Zaireeka songs
$13.65 Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, drops the overwrought fratboy party appeal of his previous releases for this subdued take on the "Big Beat" formula. Cook conjures up soulful, gospel-inflected music that draws equally from classic rock as it does from acid house. Cook's samples vary wildly, from Jim Morrison to Bill Withers, but are part of considered arrangements and beautifully restrained production.

Zaireeka album
$14.45 Crowded House co-founder Tim Finn's 1983 solo debut ESCAPADE spearheaded the artist's decision to become a solo artist later in his career.
Following Split Enz's Time & Tide, Tim Finn took his first break from the band with Escapade, a collection of light pop songs, some of which dated back to the late '70s but never seemed to quite fit in the Enz format. ...
| | Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future CD (2001)
Zaireeka CD music
$10.45 Built To Spill abandoned any strictly lo-fi leanings long before ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE, the band's fifth full-length release, but it is with this album that the trio's near-perfect balance of indie- (almost math-) rock and surprisingly irresistible pop hooks hits stride for a full, satisfying LP. ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE retains the line-up of Doug Martsch, bassist Brett Nelson, and drummer Scott Piouf for a third go around, and the consistency has paid off for the most level album of their career. From tracks like the insistent opening track "Strange" to the meanderingly beautiful "The ...
| | Dartanian Path Of Glory CD (2006)
Zaireeka music CDs
$6.69 Caught somewhere between epic 80's metal and modern progressive rock lies Dartanian. We try to combine catchy maiden-esque guitars, victorious sing-along anthems, odd-metered but accessible riffs and straight up breakdowns. It all started in 2002 when the song River was conceived by Sean, Jesse and our friend Scott on the back porch of our old house in Boulder. At that point a band was put together with the sole objective of having fun. We tend to practice on an infrequent basis and play shows even less often. We've done everything on our own terms, from booking tours to releasing records. What we always try to achieve with everything we do though is to rock as hard as humanly ...
