With LEADERS NOT FOLLOWERS, metal/hardcore heavyweight outfit Napalm Death joins the ranks of Slayer and Metallica in releasing an EP of cover songs, taking this premise in an even more extreme direction. While Metallica brought songs by bands such as Budgie and Killing Joke to a metal mainstream audience, Napalm Death pays tribute to underground hardcore, grindcore, metal, and punk acts, some of which saw the legendary tape trading phenomenon of the '80s as their only means of distribution.
LEADERS NOT FOLLOWERS spans the globe in its nostalgic trek, from Italy's Raw Power, through Toronto's Slaughter (not to be confused with the hair metal band of the same name), to little-known Pentagram from Chile. The centerpiece of the set is "Nazi Punks Fuck Off, " by the Dead Kennedys, re-recorded especially for this essential collection.
1999 EP from the Godfathers of Grindcore, their first release for the Dream Catcher. Contains six tracks, all covers of classic punk & rock classics by the likes of Dead Kennedys (including 'Nazi Punks Fuck Off'), Repulsion, Death, etc. 1999 release. Standard jewelcase.
1999 British-issued EP with six cover songs
Recorded at Jacobs Studios, Surrey, England on from July 21-24, 1999. Includes liner notes by Borivoj Krgin.
Napalm Death: Mark "Barney" Greenway (vocals); Mitch Harris, Jesse Pintado (guitar); Shane Embury (bass); Danny Herrera (drums).

Thoughtfully, complete lyrics are provided -- thus, a verse from "Vomited Anal Tract": "Your vagus implodes, as nausea strikes/Savaging your body in terminal retch/Violent spasms and decaying enzymes/Engulf your throat as you ...

| | Alice In Chains Nothing Safe CD (1999) Bonus Track; Japan
Leaders Not Followers album
$34.69 "Get Born Again" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
A notable Japanese issue of exclusively live BBC material; includes one bonus track. 1999.
Acting as a precursor to the box set MUSIC BANK, NOTHING SAFE: THE BEST OF THE BOX gives listeners a glimpse into the 12-year career of one of the forefathers of the Seattle sound. The previously unreleased studio track, "Get Born Again" shows that Alice in Chains are firmly grounded in their haunting minor-key vocal harmonies, memorable hooks, and larger-than-life guitar sound. NOTHING SAFE includes some shining moments from all the band's previous releases. An emotionally-charged version of "Rooster" shows off the band's live prowess, while "What the Hell Have I" enchants with its marriage of Indian-flavored guitar and sitar contrasted against distorted vocals and tasteful percussion. On the brink of a new millennium of shifting musical tastes and trends, Alice in Chains keeps something safe: its distinctive sound and vision.
Nothing Safe anticipated 1999's three-disc Alice in Chains box set, which covered the group's best songs and assorted rarities. Because Nothing Safe is ostensibly a sampler of the box, not the Alice in Chains back catalog, what at first glance looks like a comprehensive best-of is actually somewhat questionable. The package is not unattractive, since nearly all the hits are present in some form; also included are the new song "Get Born Again" and the better of the group's two contributions to the Last Action Hero soundtrack, "What the Hell Have I." The problem is that "present in some form" does not necessarily mean "original form." "Rooster" is included in a live version not present on the box, while a demo of "We Die Young" replaces the studio take, and the unplugged version of "Got Me Wrong" (which, granted, received ...

$13.39 Sorting out who played what on A Multitude of Stars isn't, at first glance, easy, mostly because the Statesmen of Jazz consists of about 30 musicians. Luckily, they take turns playing in fairly large combos under various leaders over the course of two discs. The talent involved is enormous, and even naming a handful of the participants -- Clark Terry, Red Holloway, Ken Peplowski, Kenny Davern, and Bucky Pizzarelli -- impresses. Each group is allowed three to six pieces to show off their particular style, giving listeners plenty of time to assess and enjoy each set. Terry leads the first group, and they kick off with two of his originals -- "Top and Bottom" and "Elijah" -- before delving into an eight-minute romp on Bessie Smith's "Backwater Blues" with a fine vocal by Carrie Smith. Terry's fairly modern set makes way for ...

$20.05 James Lavelle's UNKLE project has offered virtually everything to its fans and the listening public -- virtually everything, except for great music. UNKLE full-lengths seem primed to make a major impact on music and culture. They're packed with high concept, dense with thematic elements ripped from the headlines (especially the war in Iraq), and this time out, include an artwork-packed booklet (featuring Massive Attack's Robert del Naja, Ben Drury, and Will Bankhead). The fact that the music has never fulfilled its expectations, despite the undeniable talents of everyone involved, points to a too-many-cooks problem. War Stories finds the group, a core duo of Lavelle and Richard File, enlisting major production help from Chris Goss. Goss' work with Masters of Reality and Kyuss made the California/Arizona desert a haven for progressive metal, and its influence is all over this record. Fellow desert rat Josh Homme reprises his role from the last UNKLE full length, along with del Naja (as 3D), indie rockers Autolux, English neo-garage band the Duke Spirit, and finally, Ian Astbury (like Lavelle, another Englishman apparently fascinated with the American Southwest). Astbury's vocals on "Burn My Shadow" and "When Things Explode" make for a pair of highlights; they're one of the few points ...
