| | Pure Jazz CD
We have to assume that the ABC's-of-jazz primer that is PURE JAZZ was assembled and released to coincide with Ken Burns's ten-part JAZZ documentary and Burns's own jazz-history box set and single-disc compilation. At the same time, we have to admire PURE JAZZ for covering so many bases within such a short amount of musical space-time. This is a whirlwind tour of many disparate avenues in the jazz world. The listener is guided from the early swing of Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing" to Dave Brubeck's pioneering odd-metered, cool-jazz anthem "Take Five" to the bossa-jazz of "Girl from Ipanema by Stan Getz and Joao & Astrud Gilberto, all on a single disc. All the cuts included here are classics, and all will be familiar to jazz fans, but PURE JAZZ is created for, and will be of service to the jazz neophyte.
Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics).
Compilation producers: Ken Druker, Jeff Moskow.

| | Police Message In A Box: The Complete Recordings CDs (1993)
Pure Jazz CD music
$38.45 MESSAGE IN A BOX contains tracks from the group's five studio albums, rare B-sides, and live tracks. It also includes a 64-page booklet with extensive liner notes, a discography, the band's commentary on the b-sides and other obscure tracks, rare photographs and a Police time-line.
Digitally remastered by David Collins (A&M Mastering Studios).
Although the Police lasted for less than a decade, they recorded enough material to fill out the four CDs that make up MESSAGE IN A BOX. In addition to everything on their five studio albums, this box set contains soundtrack material, singles and demos featuring the contributions of guitarist Andy Summers' predecessor Henri Padovani (on the band's first single "Fallout" b/w "Nothing Achieving"). The Police's most consistent quality was their anomalousness.
Their path started in the punk environs of mid-'70s London despite the fact that all three were older and had considerably better chops (due to varying jazz backgrounds) ...
| | Perfect Storm CD (2000) Original Soundtrack
Pure Jazz music CDs
$8.99 If composer James Horner's highest profile follow-up to his Oscar-winning music for TITANIC proves anything, it's that Horner is now the pre-eminent purveyor of scores for big budget films about ships in peril. The music itself is in Horner's usual accomplished but derivative vein, an eclectic mix of classical influences--echoes of Copland, Prokofiev, Mahler, and Rachmaninov--and film composers from Hollywood's Golden Age, in particular Ernest Gold.
The most interesting new wrinkle here is the occasional addition ...
| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Pure Jazz songs
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Pure Jazz album
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" ...
