Import pressing of their two-disc, 16-track collection. Universal.

Personnel: Ronnie Van Zant (vocals); Gary Rossington, Allen Collins (guitar); Billy Powell (keyboards).
Gold & Platinum was compiled by Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, the two surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, after the band's tragic plane crash of 1977. Though many years have elapsed since its 1979 release, the double-record set remains the best, most concise compilation of the groundbreaking Southern rock band. Over the course of two albums, all of Skynyrd's hits -- "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "You Got That Right" -- are featured, as well as essential album tracks like "That Smell," "Down South Jukin'," "Gimme Three Steps," "I Know a Little," and "Tuesday's Gone." Some great songs like "Workin' for MCA" are missing, and the four-disc box set may be more comprehensive, but it's hard to imagine a better, more concise greatest-hits collection than Gold & Platinum. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Released barely two years after the tragic plane crash that took the lives of several members, Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1979 double album GOLD AND PLATINUM was the first in a long line of best-of compilations for the band. In addition to the exhaustive 1991 box set LYNYRD SKYNYRD, it remains one of the best compilations of the band's work.
All the usual Skynyrd favorites can be found here, as well as several often overlooked album tracks. Fans of classic rock radio will be long familiar with such Southern rock nuggets as "Sweet Home Alabama," the classic jam epic "Freebird," plus such rowdy rockers as "Saturday Night Special," "Gimme Back My Bullets," and "That Smell," as well as the more restrained "Simple Man" and "Tuesday's Gone."

5 stars The Best
This is one of the greatest southern rock albums of all time. It portrays Lynyrd Skynyrd at their absolute best, and what can one say about the live "Freebird" on this album, it's one of THE most popular live songs ever recorded! I'm curious why this site does not even list the second half of this delicious album...it's misleading and looks like they're just selling HALF of what's really there with Gold & Platinum, they should fix it.

5 stars Great Anthology Of Lynyrd Skynyrd
GOLD AND PLATINUM is a great anthology of Lynyrd Skynyrd. It contains many of their most well-known songs, including the live version of "Free Bird." However, it has one major flaw- it only contains one song from the landmark SECOND HELPING album, the 1974 Top 10 "Sweet Home Alabama." Nevertheless, it is still a must-own.

Apple Pie Motherhood Band: Michael Sorafine, Ted Demos (vocals, guitars); Adam Myers (vocals, harmonica); Bruce Paine (vocals); Dick Barnaby (bamboo flute, bass guitar); Jef Labes (keyboards); Jack Bruno (drums).
The preponderance of fuzzed-out, bluesy guitar riffs, organ trills, and laid-back vocals mark the band as one of many Hendrix-inspired acts of the 1960s, but Apple Pie Motherhood Band had enough writing and playing chops (particularly keyboardist Jef Labes) to land a two-album deal with Atlantic Records. This 1968 album, re-released on CD in 2007, takes up where their promising debut album left off, with the requisite Muddy Waters and Motown covers and mildly psychedelic pop songs like "Orangutan" and "Super Music Man," rich with vocal harmonies and adventuresome variegations in time signatures.
Apple Pie (1969) pulled double duty for the Boston-based Apple Pie Motherhood Band. It was both the follow-up to their 1968 self-titled debut as well as their swan song. By decades' end the combo consisted of founders Richard Barnaby (bass) -- now known as Dick Barnaby and also credited on bamboo flute, Jackie Bruno (drums), Ted Demos (guitar,) and Jeff Labes (organ/piano). Joe Castagno (guitar) was replaced by Michael Sorafine (guitar) and not one, but two frontmen were added by way of Bruce Paine (vocals) and Adam Meyers (harmonica/vocals). Unlike their former outing, nearly half of Apple Pie consists of reworkings of R&B classics, including a honky-tonkin' take of Chuck Berry's "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man," a wailing remake of the mod Motown entry "Get Ready," as well as an outstanding rave on Willie Dixon's "I Just ...

Take Cover
Queensryche Take Cover CD  (2007)

Gold And Platinum
CD $11.95  3.5 stars Audio Samples
Queensryche have a knack for keeping their fans guessing. A case in point: the band followed up their lofty, concept-driven MINDCRIME II album with a distinct break from their serious side in the form of TAKE COVER. This all-covers set features a decidedly eclectic mix of song choices, from the logical (Pink Floyd, Dio-era Black Sabbath) to the tangential (one show tune and an operatic aria, both clearly inspired by dramatic singer Geoff Tate) to the questionable (Philly soul and '60s protest songs). Still, uneven as it may be, the album gives Queensryche fans a chance to experience the group having some genuine fun for a change.
Now here's a weird one: Queensr˙che's covers album. Given their long run, and the rock & roll tradition the band's members have come from and indulged in as individual listeners, it shouldn't perhaps be a surprise that they'd be interested in everything from Pink Floyd to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Queen, Black Sabbath, Gamble & Huff, the Police, U2, and Peter Gabriel (oh yeah, and the score of Jesus Christ Superstar). Appalled or intrigued yet? Both? Yeah. For fans of this mighty, conceptual prog metal unit, there is nothing to fear. The renaissance that Queensr˙che underwent when founding guitarist Chris DeGarmo left the band has been nothing short of astonishing. From Tribe to Operation: Mindcrime II to this, the results have been for the most part tremendously satisfying. The live records, which are really live, attest to that. While the opening version of Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" draws very natural comparisons to the paranoia and fear on the Mindcrime series, it does not prepare listeners for the reinvention of the Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber penned "Heaven on Their Minds," from J.C. Superstar, sung from the point of view of Judas Iscariot. Queensr˙che turn this baby into a first-rate metal tune, using its melody but changing its dynamic range and creating a tension that is both heavy and almost unbearably emotional at the same time (and vocalist Geoff Tate should be considered for the role when another touring production of the hard rock musical is assembled: he sings his ass off). The same goes for the C,S,N&Y covers "Almost Cut My Hair" and Stills' "For What It's Worth," as done by his preceding band with Young, the Buffalo Springfield.
These are paranoid, overtly political songs, as were their originals, and the edge of paranoia coming from the twin guitars of Michael Wilton and Mike Stone push the former from being simply a rocker into an overdriven, riff-propelled jam. The latter doesn't work quite as well, but it's pleasant enough, even ...
