| | Trisha Pope Monkey CD - Import Trisha Pope Discography of CDs
From the fun and lighthearted to sad, lonely introspection, Monkey made it clear that Trisha Pope was hardly one-dimensional. The charming jazz singer draws on influences ranging from Sheila Jordan to Annie Ross, although she has a cleaner, less gritty approach than either of them. Pope's more fun and playful side asserts itself on "If I Had Rhythm in My Nursery Rhymes" and her own "Dragons & Witches," both of which are a long way from the rueful, unhappy ballad singing of "Angel Eyes" and "Black Coffee." Pope is a fine ballad singer, but the angular title song demonstrates that she's equally comfortable with sax-like blowing at a fast tempo. Recorded in Montreal in 1990 and released by the Canadian Duke Street label, this CD made it to American stores as an import. ~ Alex Henderson
Recorded at Studio Son Montreal, Montreal, Canada in March 1990.
Personnel: Trisha Pope (vocals, flute); Mike Pinsonneault (alto saxophone); Stephen Amirault (piano); Mike Downes (bass); Dave Laing (drums).

| | Al Jarreau The Very Best of: an Excellent Adventure CD (2009) Remastered
Monkey
$14.85 Vocalist Al Jarreau is one of the most successful singers in history. He has scored hits on Billboard's Jazz, R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Contemporary Jazz charts. He's won multiple Grammys and sold millions of records. Rhino has assembled 15 tracks that represent his long career with Warner Brothers and even cross-licensed a couple from Universal's GRP and Verve imprints. In addition to the 15 career-spanning cuts ranging roughly from 1975 to 1988 with a couple of tunes thrown in from the current decade, there is a new song entitled "Excellent Adventure," produced by the team of Amhir "?uestlove" Thompson and James Poyser, the same pair that produced Al Green's successful ...

| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Monkey
$8.75 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving ...
| | Jon Balke Siwan CD (2009)
Monkey
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar Zamini. It's a heady mixture all around, and beautifully produced by ECM founder Manfred Eicher once again. ...
| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Monkey
$23.29 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music ...
| | 25 All-Time Greatest Summer Songs CDs (2000)
Monkey
$14.65 Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep, Hollywood, California).
Since these tracks date back to the '60s and early '70s, this upbeat collection of happy sunshiny tunes should have an "oldies" tag attached to its boasting, clumsy title. Otherwise there's little about this collection that doesn't live up to its rather grandiose moniker. OK, so the unfortunate exclusion of the Beach Boys as well as fellow California surfers Jan & Dean leaves this lacking, but there are plenty of other compilations that include them, and fascinating rarities such as the Wombles' "Wombling Summer Party" as well as the Legendary Masked Surfers (featuring Dean Torrence) ...

| | Peter Cincotti On The Moon CD (2004)
Monkey
$9.59 As a teenage piano-and-vocal prodigy, Peter Cincotti was, predictably, subject to criticisms of being nothing more than a pale imitation of his influences. On his second full-length album, ON THE MOON, however, the New York City native exhibits the type of quiet confidence that normally takes decades to develop. Unlike many talented youngsters, Cincotti is neither rebel nor revivalist. Rather, he combines a bit of the bluesy New Orleans raunch of his mentor Harry Connick, Jr. with a distinctly Big Apple sophistication that's as much Brill Building as it is Blue Note. The result is something at once fresh and accessible, based in classic forms yet quite contemporary.
Phil Ramone's clean, dry production insures that the focus is always placed squarely on Cincotti's vocals, even on the title track and ...

Monkey
$11.19 The first major MC to come out of the Pacific Northwest (straight outta Tacoma, Washington, to be precise), Sir Mix-a-Lot appeared on the national scene with 1987's SWASS, boasting his own language and a spare, spacey sound, one which owed a heavy debt to the electro-beat-box style of Afrika Bambaataa, but hinted at the P-Funk leanings of later West Coast rap. "Posse on Broadway" (that's Seattle's Broadway, ...
