| | Dawn Thomson Best Things In Life CD - Import Dawn Thomson Discography of CDs
Guitarist/vocalist Thomson is from Canada, and while her six-string work is reflective of greats like Wes Montgomery, one can't help but think she's been influenced by fellow Canadian Ed Bickert. The same clean, flowing, distinct single lines that inform Thomson's style are very much a part of Bickert's as well. Vocally, she's quite comparable to Rebecca Kilgore, a sweet, solid voice that rarely takes a chance to scat or extrapolate a lyric. Longtime Bickert running mate Don Thompson is here, but on piano instead of bass, and he proves to be a force. Drummer Barry Elmes, bassist Pat Collins, and tenor saxophonist John Nugent provide Thomson with good people to bounce ideas off of. "The Best Things in Life (Are Free)" has an easy swing, while the subtle waltz "Think of Monk" has none of the expected piano angularities. Thompson's piano shines exquisitely on the inquisitive "Oh Moon, Oh Star," the well-worn standard ballad "All the Way," and the slight bossa of "September." Instrumentally, Thomson proves an adept improviser on an upbeat take of Montgomery's "S.O.S." "Coolbrook Boogie" features energetic piano in a funky tenor-led charge, and the heartfelt waltz "Song for Emily" has a beautiful, chiming melody that bears repeated listening. The most intriguing cut is Shannon Thomson's "With One Voice," which features a clever piano/guitar intro and a dramatic chamber-like melody. With the exception of "With One Voice," this is a pretty subdued record, but everything sounds good and very professionally done. Modern mainstream jazz listeners should pay attention to Dawn Thomson in the years to come. She's likely to come up with some surprising music. ~ Michael G. Nastos

Best Things In Life
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed ...

| | Everette Harp First Love CD (2009)
Best Things In Life
$15.09 On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke on Fender Rhodes with help from the exquisite if understated electric guitar work from Dwight Sills. The ...

Best Things In Life
$18.59 Following in the wake of dozens of promiscuous pop queens and wannabe good girls gone bad, Delta Goodrem's presence in the music industry is a refreshing change. From the title of her album to its cover image, Innocent Eyes reflects a mature yet clean display of true vocal talent in the slush of today's overproduced pop. With an entourage of live instruments (as opposed to synthesizers), Goodrem's piercing voice washes through the meticulously penned and planned tracks. Her style bears ...
