| | R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 CD
EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Rhythm & Blues Christmas, Vol. 2 is an odd hodgepodge of soul, jazz, urban contemporary and R&B tunes largely culled from the EMI vaults (there are also a couple of cuts from Hi and Solar and Philadelphia International, which EMI's reissue label the Right Stuff has acquired over the years). There are certainly a number of great artists here -- Nat "King" Cole, Lou Rawls, Lena Horne, Charles Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, the O'Jays and Al Green -- but they're artists who don't necessarily belong on the same compilation. Consequently, the compilation never quite gels, despite its uniformly high quality. Then again, considering that the disc is inexpensive, it's probably worth its price for budget-minded listeners, simply because there is a lot of good music on the disc. You can figure out the sequence that works best with your CD programming. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 Music R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 Songs | 1. | This Christmas - The Whispers |

| | Saxon Eagle Has Landed III CDs (2006)
R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 album
$16.75 It was on the concert stage (or more precisely, their local bar's stage) that the majority of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands caused an initial buzz in their native land. And one of the genre's most popular live acts at the time was Saxon. Thus far, the group has issued countless live sets over the years, and 2006 saw the latest entry in their ongoing The Eagle Has Landed series. Recorded during various Europe dates circa 2004 and 2005, the double-disc Eagle Has Landed, Vol. 3 contains both blasts from the past and new tracks (disc one focusing on their early days through 1984, while the majority of disc two focuses on 1991 through 2004). Saxon 2006 only sees two original bandmembers still in attendance -- singer Biff Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn -- but Saxon's signature, anthemic metal sound remains intact. With Saxon's '80s era considered by most fans to be their strongest, the first disc is expectedly the better of the two, as it includes "Never Surrender," "And the Bands Played On," "Warrior" (which sounds like Kill ...

R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 CD music
$12.65 Though Dollar never had a high profile in the U.S., their importance in the U.K. can't be exaggerated, since the duo's work with Trevor Horn made for his first big successes after the Buggles and his brief stint with Yes, as well as laying the blueprint for his later worldwide smashes. Though phrasing it in those terms understates David Van Day and Thereza Bazar's own abilities -- if the songs that were done with Horn's help are truly their high points, their gossamer-like, gentle singing voices were actually perfectly appropriate for their tunes previous and subsequent to those. The Platinum Collection, part of a general series of greatest-hits repackages for Warner in the U.K. covering various bands, is a perfectly fine one-disc overview, starting with their best smashes of the Horn era -- the perky "Mirror Mirror" (also included at the end in demo form), the slow building dramatics of "Give Me Back My Heart" (the cascading conclusion alone is sheer, ...

$39.39 | | Yung Joc Hustlenomics CD (2007) Edited
R&B Christmas, Vol. 2 music CDs
$15.65 On the follow-up to his hugely successful 2006 debut, NEW JOC CITY, ATL native Yung Joc shows further versatility as he toes the line between hardcore dopeman image and radio-friendly mass appeal. The overt coke-serving imagery throughout the lead single, "Coffee Shop," is tempered with an infectiously happy background track and pubescent chorus singers. Joc gets gangsta with the Game, Block, and Jim Jones on the gritty, DJ Quik-produced "Cutthroat" and then plays around with alphabet nursery rhymes alongside Bun B and Young Dro on "I'm a G."
The production (courtesy of Cool and Dre, Don Vito, Don P, The Neptunes, Jazzy Pha, Chris Flames, DJ Dana, Strong Hill, and Khao) wavers between traditionally gritty trap music and pop fare while Yung Joc does his best to mask the adult content of HUSTLENOMICS with euphemisms like "servin' pies" and "smell that fruity fruit." Gorilla Zoe, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Mike Carlito, Southern Girl, and Diddy round out the thick guest list.
A big improvement over his debut, Hustlenomics finds a looser Yung Joc letting more of his personality through. Added to his already proven ability to deliver infectious hooks and convincing swagger, it's a pretty deadly combination and best experienced on the excellent single "Coffee Shop," a playful number that combines hard thugging and coffee culture in ways never thought possible. Almost as good is "BYOB," a robotic and minimal triumph for both Joc and producers the Neptunes, who are also in charge of the very good "Hell ...
