As a budget-priced collection goes, EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Big Hits of the '80s is quite nice. Many budget-line collections stop at ten or 12 tracks, and occasionally contain remakes. Big Hits of the '80s doesn't skimp -- it has 20 tracks, all in their original hit versions. There might not be many surprises among those 20, but since it contains hits like "Mickey," "Centerfold, " "C'est La Vie, " "Abracadabra, " "Promises, Promises, " "Don't Dream It's Over, " "Only the Lonely, " "Never Surrender, " "Mary's Prayer, " "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone), " "Walking on Sunshine, " "Miss Me Blind, " "Morning Train (Nine to Five)" and "Don't Shed a Tear, " it's certainly an entertaining listen that's well worth its budget price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Big Hits Of The 80'S (EMI Special Markets) Music Big Hits Of The 80'S (EMI Special Markets) Songs | 1. | Mickey - Toni Basil |

Big Hits Of The 80'S (EMI Special Markets)
$11.99 This compilation is just what it says: number one hits on the American charts from the 1960s. It has a leg up on some similar anthologies, though, by virtue of its sheer quantity: 26 songs spanning the entire decade, which is pretty good value for a single CD. While it's true the selection is a little arbitrary, on the whole it's really good, and whether you care about chart statistics or not, it's an excellent disc if you're looking for an all-purpose collection of 1960s pop/rock classics. There are many core classics here, spanning rock, soul, pop, ...

Big Hits Of The 80'S (EMI Special Markets)
$10.39 Among the things that parents wish for their children, along with success and happiness, of course, is that they will like the same music as their elders, a wish in most cases destined to remain unfulfilled. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal, and Hip-O Records, a reissue arm of Universal Music, tries to further that hope (and resell some old music) with Totally '80s for Kids, a sampler of danceable pop music from a decade when many of the parents of the 2000s were forming their musical taste. It was the high era of synth pop and MTV, when a second British Invasion (more than half the artists here are British) swept the country on a wave of squiggly electronic pulses played by people with a lot of stiff stuff in their hair. This edition in the Universal Music Family series proclaims on the cover that it is right for "ages 2+," but there really isn't any children's music on the disc. Granted, novelty hits like Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and Trio's "Da Da Da" probably can be appreciated just as well by toddlers as by their parents or babysitters. And the album maintains a constant peppy beat from Kool & the Gang's multipurpose hit "Celebration" to Dexys Midnight Runners' closing cover of Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)." ~ William Ruhlmann
