Perverse attempts to expand on the success Jesus Jones enjoyed with Doubt, not only commercially but artistically as well. The group made some history; this is the first album to be recorded entirely through a computer. Musically, Perverse is a synthesis of techno/rave dance music with traditional pop/rock songs and structures; it's an ambitious album that works sporadically. Bandleader Mike Edwards lost sight of most of the pop-song sensibility that made "Right Here, Right Now" an across-the-boards smash. Too often, the hooks are submerged beneath layers of computerized noise and aren't strong enough to pull themselves out. When Perverse clicks, Jesus Jones gives the listener an idea of how enjoyable a successful marriage of techno and rock could be. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Digitally remastered re-issue of the band's third album includes the hits 'The Right Decision', 'Zeroes & Ones' and 'The Devil You Know'.

Rolling Stone (2/18/93, p.60) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...continues to break ground in the new genre of rave-meets-rock bands...it's amazing to hear a record with the first death-metal rave song...provocative..." Q (2/93, p.82) - 3 Stars - Good - "...An album of imperious precision, it has absolutely no ambition to charm--just like its predecessor which was admirable, unlovely and bought by 2 million souls. Intensely structured, cold, hi-tech savagery..." Alternative Press (3/93, p.52) - "...worshippers will find Jesus as hard-edged as ever, adding even more industrial effects to his psychedelic swirl...Jesus Jones is the lost link between Ministry's WITH SYMPATHY and TWITCH..." Perverse album
$16.65 2 LPs on 1 CD; BREAD & BUTTER/BIG BEAT SOUNDS BY THE NEWBEATS.
This two-fer CD reissue combines the Newbeats' first two albums onto one disc, adding both sides of a non-LP 1966 single. Although each included a few big and small hit singles, the rest of the material was filler, most of the tracks being subpar rock & roll oldies covers or contemporary songs from other sources. Bread and Butter, the first of the pair, was issued hot on the heels of their huge smash "Bread and Butter" in late 1964, with nothing else on the album matching the big hit (which led off side one, of course). Padding out the record were inferior covers of oldies ("Bye Bye Love," "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," "So Fine") and then-recent hits ("The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in Her Kiss)," "I'm Blue (The Gong Gong Song)") that added nothing of note to the originals, save Larry Henley's distinctively hair-raising falsetto vocals. Not that the rest of the album was much better, with a derivative stomper, "Pink Dally Rue," in the mold of "I'm Blue (The Gong Gong Song)" (a problem considering that the latter song was also included on the LP); a John D. Loudermilk tune, "Everything's Alright," ...

| | Innocence Mission Birds Of My Neighborhood CD (1999) Reissue
Perverse music CDs
$9.49 Principally recorded at the Keppel Building, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Thirteen years after recording their debut, the Innocence Mission remains an island of calm, a beacon of hope in a chaotic world. From the quiet city of Lancaster, PA, the three members of the Innocence Mission make their music, all of it exalting love and friendship, peace and joy. Here, group founders and songwriters Don Peris (guitar/vocals) and Karen Peris (vocals/guitar/piano), along with Mike Bitts (bass), have handcrafted their fourth album, Birds of My Neighborhood. Karen Peris was also featured on Natalie Merchant's album Ophelia, adding her mystical voice on a few tracks. ~ Amanda Nusbaum
THE INNOCENCE MISSION HAS NEVER been concerned with image or posturing but has chosen instead to concentrate solely on their music. This is more evident than ever on the group's release, Birds Of My Neighborhood. The departure of drummer Steve Brown and the decision not to replace him has meant that the group's backbone and sound coloring now come from the acoustic guitars of Karen and Don Peris. Their recording is so sparse and intimate that it sounds like a group of friends playing in a living room, and this approach perfectly frames the wistful sentiments expressed in the songs. The Innocence Mission was formed by Karen and Don with Brown and Mike Bitts while they were attending high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Don and Karen started dating the first summer they met and often played their guitars together. As Don says, "it's romantic and inexpensive." Even in their earliest years, the band's sound was centered around Karen's heart-felt vocals and introspective songwriting. A&M records signed the band in 1989 and released an eponymous debut that is considered to be a classic among die-hard fans. They recorded two more albums for A&M, Umbrella (1991) and Glow (1995), toured with acts like ...
| | Joe Grushecky Good Life CD (2006)
Perverse songs
$12.39 Joe Grushecky writes like a regular guy for a good reason -- he is one. While Grushecky has had a long career in rock & roll, including a brief flirtation with the major labels as frontman for the Iron City Houserockers, these days he earns his living as a schoolteacher and makes music on the side, which is doubtless why when he writes about the lives of working stiffs and ordinary Joes, the songs bear the ring of truth rather than a sense of condescension. A Good Life is Grushecky's tenth album since the breakup of the Houserockers, and it doesn't break much in the way of new ground, but that isn't a bad thing -- this is solid and heartfelt rust belt rock & roll played ...
