The resulting album is as unpredictable as it is enriching”—Alex Henderson, CD Review Magazine This is the first release by the Chicago-based globaljazz quintet FLIPPOMUSIC. Pianist/composer Dave Flippo’s diverse background took him through the academic world of “concert compositions” and the study of world music as he achieved his Doctorate and Masters at the University of Michigan and Eastman (respectively) but then went on to base his musical language in jazz. The blending of these many areas resulted in the concept found on both Tendrils of Light and, later, Ganesh—blending elements of jazz with elements of one or two world music styles in each tune.This first CD release includes “Buddha’s Siesta,” (Japanese/Samba), Arabopic (Middle Eastern), “Tendrils of Light” (Indian), “Antelopin” (Afro-Cuban) and “Zimbabalupi” (African) as well as contemporary jazz compositions and arrangements in a wide (and sometimes unusual) range of styles. The two covers include “Well You Needn’t” (Reggae) and “Do Nothing ‘Till You Hear it From Me” (slinky modal)Players include Dave Flippo-keys, Dan Hesler-saxes and flutes, Steve Hashimoto-electric bass, Aras Biskis-drum kit, Hamid Drake, Michael Zerang and Ken Gueno-percussion, Donn De Santo-acoustic bass.

On this, Brad Mehldau's fifth installment of trio records, he returns to his jazzier roots by playing a series of standard tunes including "Long Ago and Far Away," "Alone Together," and "How Long Has This Been Going On." Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, this two-disc set offers listeners 13 chances to hear this band's cerebral swing. The opening track, the Mack Gordon/Harry Warren tune, "The More I See You" shows off Mehldau's improvisational skill as he whips around the keyboard, playing flurries of notes.

Acoustic guitar whiz Merle Watson, son of American musical treasure Doc Watson, died in a farm accident in 1985. A memorial concert was held at Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in April of 1988, and it proved so successful that it grew into an annual event. Dubbed Merlefest, the concert grew to four days in length, with some 13 stages, over a hundred performers, and as it approaches its 20th year, regularly draws in excess of 80,000 people, making it one of the most respected folk festivals on the circuit. This disc collects highlights from the 2003 Merlefest, and it should come as no surprise that Doc Watson turns in a couple of the best performances here, since the man has never made a bad recording in his life. His versions of "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor" and "Match Box Blues" have the easy and natural grace we've come to expect from Watson. Other standouts here include Guy Clark's deceptively simple "Black Diamond Strings," an intimate and hoarse-voiced Ralph Stanley on "A Robin Built a Nest on Daddy's Grave," an elegant and polished rendition of "Main Street Blues" by the Red Stick Ramblers, and the chugging, rocking "Conscious Evolution" by Donna the Buffalo. It doesn't replace being in attendance at Merlefest, but these are wonderfully recorded tracks, and the joy and intimacy on display is a true testament to the memory of Merle Watson. ~ Steve Leggett
