This set is one of the best all-round showcases for the underrated Chicago guitarist George Freeman. He has an opportunity to really stretch out on seven standards, taking his time, letting his notes sing, and coming up with fresh variations. Although essentially bebop/hard bop, Freeman also throws in occasional ideas that let the listener know that he is quite familiar with later developments in jazz. An unusual aspect to this date is that Freeman's brother, tenor saxophonist Von Freeman, plays piano throughout the session. Although not a virtuoso, Von Freeman provides stimulating accompaniment and some excellent solos. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

Rebellion music CDs
$14.79 Sometimes the gift is needed...The discovery of just how wonderful music is, the joy of singing and the goose bumps you find in a great song came to me in Fairbanks Elementary's 6th grade. Later, in a New Orleans high school, I was given an old guitar. I learned to play by begging/annoying friends into teaching me one chord at a time. I was influenced by Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkle. I spent evenings over the levee on the banks of the Mississippi River, parked on the hood of a car, listening to Motown on a scratchy AM radio, watching Otis Redding's ships roll in. I found Aaron Copeland, Charles Ives and Bach. I found Cream, Santana, Blind Faith, Moody Blues, Mountain, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Iron Butterfly and a ton of other music. There was Woodstock, Big Sur, and the Concert for Bangladesh. It was the message that we must see to each other and be a community with healing as its goal... It all formed and excited and brought me to places in my soul, ways of thinking I never thought about before. It just plain spoke to me and it spoke for me and it moved me finally to speak for myself. I began to write songs born out of all that experience.I continued writing and performing into adulthood until life presented its own challenges to be husband and daddy. I struggled to maintain the balance of the dream and the job. I began to drive a city bus and the dream moved to the back burner and finally off the stove. The job had won, the dream fell to slumber. Years passed and, with the ecouragement of my wife, Sindy, and the friends who surrounded me, I decided to launch out again and chance the dream.Sometimes the gift is given...We were all there that night, ...

| | Cathy Miller Quilter's World CD (2008)
Rebellion CD music
$20.29 \"A Quilter\'s World\" is the third quilting CD by Canadian quilter/songwriter Cathy Miller. It features 16 new songs that run the gamut from a quilting lullaby to rock and roll (\"Stitching in the Ditch\"), from Australian waggas (co-written by Jenny Bowker) to cats in the sewing room. It even steps out into non-quilting territory with the hilarious \"Sweaters for Penguins\" about sweaters/jumpers made to save Little Penguins from oil spills by knitters around the world. A duet with her husband, John Bunge, about the tradeoffs quilters and their husbands negotiate. And one for the longarmers: \"You Can Quilt That Out\". If you loved \"One Stitch at a Time\" and \"A Quilter\'s Embrace\", you\'ll love this one too! More songs to make you shed a sentimental tear or howl with laughter, from the \"Singing Quilter\". Here\'s a rundown of the songs:In a Quilter\'s World:A lovely song written by Torontonian Rick Speyer. \"The sewing room is a sacred place\" sums it all up for me. It\'s bound to become a favourite.12 Step Plan for Quilters:Quilting can become an addiction, and we sometimes need some advice to negotiate our way through it. Here are the important rules for quilting: give in to the addiction, have fun, do the best you can, try new things, and the most important: you can\'t have too much stuff. Very bluesy. Very funny.I Need Another Wagga:Waggas are Australian utilitarian quilts made for warmth and durability. When a woman is out on a property by herself, with a growing family, an extra wagga is always useful. This song was co-written with renowned Australian quilter, Jenny Bowker. The Patchwork Quilt:A tender song from 1912, telling about Gran\'ma\'s patchwork quilt. It concludes with the line \"Oh I hope I\'ll have a lovely patchwork quilt like Gran\'mama\'s to show to little children when I\'m old\". They don\'t write \'em like that anymore!Sweaters For Penguins:Okay, it\'s not a quilting song! But it\'s hilarious and lots of quilters love to knit. Think \"English music hall meets little penguins in Australia\", and the thousands of little sweaters/jumpers donated from all over the world to keep the ...
