The BILLY TIPTON MEMORIAL SAXOPHONE QUARTET is named for Billy Tipton, a pianist and band leader of the swing era who lived her life as a man in order to gain acceptance as a musician.
Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet: Maya Johnson (soprano & tenor saxophones, percussion); Jessica Lurie (alto & tenor saxophones, percussion); Amy Denio (alto saxophone, percussion); Barbara Marino (baritone saxophone, dumbek, djembe, percussion); Pam Barger (drums, percussion).
The second album by this quartet of women saxophone players is a nice continuation from the group's debut, SAXHOUSE. As on the first album, the saxophonists blend various kinds of European folk music and dance music with jazz and funk styles culled from 20th century America.
Whereas Amy Denio was responsible for the bulk of the writing on the first album, Jessica Lurie jumps to the fore with her impressive writing this time out. In particular, her "Soleil" shows a fine sense of subtle melodicism and playfulness. "All Manic" is a medley of Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression" and Miles Davis's "All Blues." The merging of the two proves more than merely clever, as the quartet finds a profound sonic link between these two important pieces of music. Crystalline audio quality makes this recording even more impressive.
Recorded at Crow Recording, Seattle, Washington in December 1995. Includes liner notes by Michael Bloom.
Producers: Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet.
Additional personnel: Angelina Baldoz (trumpet).JazzTimes (10/96, p.111) - "...They honk, funk, scream and slow dirge, and come laughingly back on a disc full of ambitious original material. On the way they visit Afro-Cuban, klezmer and New Orleans themes with lots of whimsy and close attention to maintaining the core pulse through creative horn arrangements..." $12.95 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You ...

$22.79 With more than 50 musical releases and a Grammy nomination, Shujaat Husain Khan is perhaps the greatest North Indian classical musician of his generation. He belongs to the Imdad Khan gharana (tradition) of the sitar (lute) and is the seventh in the unbroken line from his family that has produced many musical masters. His style known as the gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice.Shujaat Khans’ openness to collaborating with artists of all genres of music has produced some enormously successful works. The Grammy nominated album Rain by the indo-Persian Ghazal Ensemble featuring Kayhan Kalhor is only one such example.Katayoun Goudarzi started reading and writing poetry at the age of seven in her native Tehran. Her distinctive melodic style of recitation blends an emotive rendition of the poetry with meticulous attention to the linguistic and lyrical integrity of the piece. Her accurate style is the result of decades of study and the fruits of this labor are evident in her writings and albums. Her albums include “Delbar” with the master ...
