This 1972 album was Arlo Guthrie's fifth, and continued his confident move from humorous troubadour (ALICE'S RESTAURANT) to one of the finest of the early practitioners of country-rock. After the gorgeous WASHINGTON COUNTY, which featured numerous originals, this time out Arlo focused almost exclusively on other people's material.
The album yielded one of his few chart hits with Steve Goodman's "City Of New Orleans." The sessions were produced by Lenny Waronker and John Pilla and feature such guests as Linda Ronstadt, Clarence White, Ry Cooder, Spooner Oldham, Jim Dickinson, and Chris Ethridge. This strong album and its predecessor gave Guthrie all the foundation he needed to create a true high peak with LAST OF THE BROOKLYN COWBOYS the following year.
This is the brand new re-mastered release of the Arlo classic. Digitally remastered in 2004 with state-of-the-art technololgy, the sound quality on this release is the best available today. The new packaging includes artwork missing from previous CD versions.Arlo is backed by extremely talented musicians including Doug Dillard, Clarence White, Hoyt Axton, Ry Cooder, and Jim Keltner. The songs range from the whimsical "Ukulele Lady" to Woody Guthrie's heartbreaking "1913 Massacre". Arlo's version of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans" was a hit with the album's original 1972 release.

Rolling Stone (7/20/71, pp.50-52) - "...Spirited production, intriguingly off-balance arrangements and especially well chosen material combine here to synthesize a genuine modern folk epic...He does a beautiful job, and one that really deserves to be heard..." Dirty Linen (p.51) - "[T]he album reads like a California folkie who's who..." Hobo's Lullaby album
$8.55 This 30th Anniversary Edition is a re-recording of Arlo Guthrie's 1st album.
A product of the hippie/protest movement of the mid-'60s, Arlo Guthrie, son of perennial folk icon Woody Guthrie, found himself with not so much a hit as a whole movement on his hands with the eponymous 18-minute ...
| | Arlo Guthrie Amigo CD (1976) Reissued
Hobo's Lullaby CD music
$14.29 Released in the year of the American Bicentennial, Arlo Guthrie's AMIGO is rich with a sense of love for his homeland. Perhaps most stirring is "Massachusetts," a song that could easily be adopted as the state's anthem. He manages to express deep feelings in a manner that never devolves to clichT or empty boosterism, capturing the spiritual unity one can feel with one's home. The album is again produced by John Pilla and features the usual band of studio cohorts.
The arrangements and playing all support one of ...

| | Keith Richards Talk Is Cheap CD (1988)
Hobo's Lullaby music CDs
$8.79 The first solo outing from Mr. Rock & Roll himself, TALK IS CHEAP is a solid, rootsy effort with something for everyone. The opening cut, "Big Enough," mines a deep funk groove (abetted by veteran funksters Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic fame) and makes it clear that the set will not be pure Stones revival. While "Take It So Hard" kicks off with the ...

| | Absentee Victory Shorts CD (2008)
Hobo's Lullaby CD music
$19.79 Absentee cut way back on the country-rock on their second album, Victory Shorts. What they don't scale back is the mordant wit of singer Dan Michaelson's lyrics, the band's raucous approach, the size and strength of the hooks, and -- best of all -- Michaelson's amazing voice. He has one of the deeper voices you're likely to hear outside of doo wop or opera; he sounds sort of like a steadier Johnny Cash or a way steadier Calvin Johnson. Mostly, though, he just sounds pretty great as he staggers through the ballads like a heartsick, slightly drunken fool and romps through the rockers with an amazingly light touch. Hearing him navigate the humorously choppy waters of "Bitchstealer" is alone worth the price of purchase; the depths of sadness he plumbs on slow tracks like "We Smash Plates" and "Love Has Had Its Way" is enough to take your breath away. The album itself is split between these two extremes. On the one hand are the uptempo rockers like "Bitchstealer," "Pips," and "Boy, Did She Teach You Nothing?," which are very '90s-influenced and very Pavementy (if Pavement were verse-chorus types), and feature some very pleasantly squalling guitars courtesy of Michaelson and Babak Ganjei. They're the kind of songs you'll find yourself singing along to instantly and for weeks after first hearing them. The other hand holds quiet, restrained ...
| | Atlantis CD (1973) Bonus Track
Hobo's Lullaby music CDs
$16.29 Atlantis' debut album follows firmly in the footsteps of the earlier Frumpy, with one major difference: shorter songs. Just three of the seven tracks break the five-minute barrier, only one -- the defiantly Deep Purple jazz-rocky "Living at the End of Time" -- approaches ten. But Atlantis rises regardless. The closing ballad, "Words of Love," essentially predicts Heart's entire career, while the funky overtures of "Get Up," colliding with some of Inga Rumpf's finest, gutsiest vocals, would have made a sensational ...

| | Barry Manilow Manilow CD (1985)
Hobo's Lullaby CD music
$7.45 Having indulged himself with a jazz album, 1984's 2:00 AM Paradise Café, Barry Manilow returned to being a contemporary pop artist with Manilow. The generic title, from an artist who had called an album Barry five years earlier, suggested the schematic nature of the project. Five producers in addition to Manilow himself were employed to come up with ten potential singles in a variety of styles. There were by-the-numbers Manilow ballads like "If You Were Here with Me Tonight," naturally. But Manilow led things off with the uptempo synth pop number "I'm Your Man," its romantic lyric interpretable as a re-introduction of the artist to his audience. More problematic in that regard was ...
