Flashback, a division of Rhino devoted to budget collections, has a winner with this sampling of the soul music of 1970. All ten tracks were Top Ten soul hits, five of them reaching the top of the Billboard chart and seven going gold. Six originated with Atlantic Records (one of which, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia," was issued on its Cotillion subsidiary); two with Holland-Dozier-Holland Productions, which the songwriter/producers established after leaving Motown (the Chairmen of the Board's "Give Me Just a Little More Time" on Invictus and 100 Proof Aged in Soul's "Somebody's Been Sleeping" on Hot Wax); one with Stang Records (the Moments' "Love on a Two-Way Street"); and one with Chimneyville (King Floyd's "Groove Me"). The tracks trace the development of soul music in the '70s, the expressive pop/R&B of Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett combining with the Motown-styled Chairmen of the Board and the forward-looking funk of King Floyd. And then there are indelible hits like Clarence Carter's rural survival tale, "Patches." This collection is short, but it has been well chosen. ~ William Ruhlmann

For those who've lived under a rock for almost 50 years, this review will mean less than nothing. The rest of us have no doubt encountered -- on some television program, a commercial for a K-Tel oldies collection, or, in rarer cases, songs floating in the background on a film soundtrack -- Frankie Valli's shattering falsetto fronting his rock and doo wop band, the Four Seasons. As certainly as other artists of the period are known by their signatures -- the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Miracles, the Shirelles, Dion and the Belmonts -- the Four Seasons are instantly ...

25 Years Of Soul 1970 songs
$15.98 Number Ones replaces Design of a Decade, released 14 years prior. Excepting the new song "Make Me" (hard neo-disco/funk excellence), each song here was indeed a number one hit on Billboard's various charts, though "Got 'Til It's Gone" sneaks through a side door via the Japanese charts. One number one, oddly, is missing: "So Excited," a perfectly fine, 2006 single which topped the club chart. This set is more thorough with 1986-1996, too, adding Herb Alpert's "Diamonds" -- which would not have been out of place on Control, given Jam & Lewis' production and Janet's precedence over Alpert's trumpet -- as well as "The Best Things in Life Are Free" (with Luther Vandross) -- all the smashes off janet., and "Scream" (with her brother). Say what you want about Janet peaking with Jam & Lewis during the latter half of the '80s -- to be fair, the argument is valid -- but she did rack up a career's worth of solid hits ...
