While it may have gone unnoticed due to generic and less than enticing cover art, Daydream Believer and Other Hits contains more -- albeit only slightly -- than ten recycled Monkees tracks. This 1998 budget CD is the companion to I'm a Believer and Other Hits. Both compilations contain the A- and B-sides of three Monkees singles as well a lone previously unreleased track -- although the songs are programmed in a seemingly random fashion. The contents of this release include the "Pleasant Valley Sunday"/"Words," "Valleri"/"Tapioca Tundra," and "D.W. Washburn"/"It's Nice to Be With You" 45s, as well as the A-sides of the "Daydream Believer," "Good Clean Fun," and "Oh My My" 7" releases. "You Can't Tie a Mustang Down" -- a bubblegum rocker featuring a Davy Jones vocal -- makes its debut here. The track was cut during an ill-fated recording session that record producer Don Kirshner held with only Jones, basically in an effort to hijack the Monkees project for himself. Politics aside, the song is not very good and is more akin to something the Archies might have had a go at. By the time that these later singles were issued, most of the album mixes were also used on the 45s. There are a few differences worth noting, however. The most obvious are on "Pleasant Valley Sunday," "Tapioca Tundra," and the title track, "Daydream Believer." In these cases, subtle yet significant alterations can be heard -- evident mainly on the vocals, as they were usually cut long after the instrumental backing tracks. While I'm a Believer and Other Hits remained in print for several years, Daydream Believer and Other Hits was deleted from Flashback's catalog shortly after being issued. The rarity of the disc has made what should have been a six-dollar impulse item at Wal-Mart into one of the most absurdly and astronomically priced of "budget" rarities. Initially the release was going to be a double CD featuring one song from every band (50) on the label, but that idea grew to include a 100+ page booklet that would include photos and text about the bands and the history of the label. Later a third CD was added, this one featuring unreleased or rare material from the Dischord vaults, as well as some CD-ROM video files of archival footage of performances from some of the early bands. 73 songs from various artists including The Teen Idols, Minor Threat, Gray Matter, Beefeater, The Snakes, Slant 6, Shudder To Think and many more. A Dischord box set? It may seem like an oddity to many who know little about the label, but when you think about it, it makes absolutely perfect sense. Many of the D.C. bands were and are known for amazing live shows, blowing most "punk" bands out of the water. Unfortunately, given these bands' tendency to break up after a year or so, those in the other parts of the country and the world couldn't necessarily make it down to the 9:30 club to check out Severin or Soul Side -- hence, the existence of Dischord as a label. Initially started just to document one band (the Teen Idles), it has served to document the ever-growing musical family that has come to represent some of the best music Washington D.C. has to offer. And now, after 20 years, a compilation comes along (each band is represented with one song on the first two discs) that is not only beautifully laid out, but an absolute necessity for fans of either the label as a whole or just one or two bands. On the first two discs, the progression of the label is spelled out chronologically, beginning with the rapid-fire hardcore that D.C. bands like Minor Threat, Government Issue, and Faith used to establish the scene in the early '80s. Around track 16 or so, the whole thing explodes. Bands no longer take the faster-then-hell approach, and more melodies and complexities take over.
