| | Cal Scott Fierce Joy CD Cal Scott Discography of CDs
Sometimes, we get lucky, and artists eager to prove themselves put on blinders and go for broke in the jam department. Most recent case in point, electric guitarist Cal Scott, whose debut Fierce Joy is all about unabashed live-feeling ensemble energy, damn the radio consequences. In other words, there's few true meltdown tracks tailor made for smooth jazz. Even the breezy title track offers a tough percussion base, and the Miles-like closer soars in a classical vein. What we get instead are hooky melodies pumped up by less restrained sax and flute blowing by Jeff Holman, spunky piano solos by Barry Aiken and Scott's nonstop funk-rock power, all backed by Sandin Wilson's throbbing bass. It would be exciting enough to spotlight rock guitar as a funk hallmark, but Scott has other surprises up his eclectic sleeve, as he delves spontaneously into Latin brass flavors and, right in the middle of a piece, goes purely jazzy on us. Scott is one small indie label artist who shouldn't stay small for long. ~ Jonathan Widran
Fierce Joy is Cal Scott's second contemporary jazz CD. It features Cal on electric and acoustic guitar, and Cal's working band of amazing players. This set of tunes is full of great melodies, singing solos from all the players, tight arrangements and stellar studio production. The tunes range from the good time R&B grooves of "Side Car "and "On the Town" to the Latin jazz of "Fierce Joy" and "Lips So Fine." "Adrift on the Sun and Moon" shows Scott's film score leanings, and features Cal on piano and muted cornet. "Electric guitarist Cal Scott's ...Fierce Joy ... is all about unabashed live ensemble energy... what Scott offers listeners are hooky guitar melodies pumped up by the sax and flute playing of Jeff Homan, spunky piano solos by Barry Aiken and Sandin Wilson's throbbing bass. And Scott has other surprises up his production sleeve, letting loose Latin horn riffs one moment, devolving into near straight-ahead trio the next. Scott is one small label artist who promises a big future." JAZZIZ magazine Nov/Dec 1996"Guitarist and composer Cal Scott at his best works tight rock riffs and unexpected elements into jazz timings a la Robben Ford. The best tracks on his Fierce Joy ...introduce some of these instincts...When Scott allows his edgier instincts to take hold, his band answers with fine support, generating tight grooves and timings." JAZZ TIMES, December 1996"Smoking date for those riding the creative tip ala Zappa/lite jazz. The on board crew is an array of up and coming hitters as well. Well done." Midwest Record Recap, June 14, 1996 (Review of Fierce Joy,) "Hot Jazz: Local guitarist Cal Scott and his tight group, which includes percussionist Bruce Smith and saxophonist Jeff Homan, have emerged from the studio with an impressive fusion CD, "Fierce Joy." The album combines jazz, rock, funk and Latin and shows off plenty of soloing talents by Scott and the rest of the band." The Oregonian, 4/16/96Cal Scott is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has scored over 30 specials and documentaries for PBS.JazzTimes (12/96, p.107) - "Guitarist and composer Cal Scott at his best works tight rock riffs and unexpected elements into jazz timings a la Robben Ford..." $6.59 Comprising the same lineup as Street Corner Talking, Savoy Brown released Hellbound Train a year later. For this effort, Kim Simmonds' guitar theatrics are toned down a bit and the rest of the band seems to be a little less vivid and passionate with their music. The songs are still draped with Savoy Brown's sleek, bluesy feel, but the deep-rooted blues essence that so easily emerged from their last album doesn't rise as high throughout Hellbound Train's tracks. The title cut is most definitely the strongest, with Dave Walker, Simmonds, an

Hellbound Train Live: 1969-1972 is one retrospective set that's way overdue: Savoy Brown live during their glory years. Here are two CDs worth of the mightiest, sludgiest blues-rock band on the planet during those years -- well, the possible exception of Cream -- featuring, ...

$13.65 DO YOU GET THE BLUES won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
In the decade following his departure from The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the death of his younger brother Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan quietly carved out a critically acclaimed solo career steeped in a fusion of soul and blues. Despite parting ways with Nile Rodgers, (who produced Vaughan's first two records), the laid-back Texan goes down the same creative path in assuming the production helm for DO YOU GET THE BLUES?

| | Candye Kane Superhero CD (2009)
Fierce Joy CD music
$13.29 Any time a musician survives a life-altering change, you can be sure that will be reflected in the music that follows. Often a breakup/divorce, new love/marriage, drug rehabilitation/habit or religious transformation has been responsible for some of pop's most memorable music. So it's no surprise that after Candye Kane was clear of the pancreatic cancer that could easily have been her death sentence, she would reference that experience on the album immediately following the harrowing situation. Kane doesn't waste any time doing that as the opening title track to her first post-cancer effort kicks off with the brassy singer bellowing the lyrics "I've always been a fighter" followed in the chorus by "there's no way I'm laying down and dying." Based on the aural evidence here, she has bounced back in a big way, ripping into her usual potpourri of jump blues ("Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed?"), surfy rockabilly ("Throw It in the Trash Can Love" with ex-Paladin Dave Gonzales ...

$9.35 From Northeast In-Tune Magazine: Written by Justin Wollenhaupt7 & Counting is one of those bands that makes me excited about music again. But their music is eclectic, energetic, and unique, and it gives me that priceless ...

Fierce Joy CD music
$15.05 Sally's Music Circle is a weekly music class in Pennsylvania for very young children, infants to age 5, and their parents. An important part of our music classes of singing, dancing and instrument play is our CD of songs and activities that families use for music play at home and in the car. Sally's Music Circle has produced six different CDs for use in our classes and "Mary Wore Her Red Dress" is the second of our CDs that is available to the general public. Parents and grandparents report that our CDs are their children's #1 choice for all car rides. Parents tell us they enjoy listening to our CDs even when their kids are not in the car. They also report that even their youngest pre-verbal, car seat occupants have figured out a way to ask for their Sally's Music Circle CD in the car. Each CD has a variety of songs and activities in different styles, rhythms and tonalities from around the World. There are seven different professional singers and nineteen nationally known instrumentalists in this richly diverse collection of songs selected and arranged to encourage singing and music play in very young children. You'll love it when you see your child sing, coo, move, shake, clap and bop to our songs. What makes this CD special? It's great that CD Baby will let you listen to our songs! Listen and you will hear the difference but also . . .(1) This is probably one of the few CDs where your very young child can sing along with all the songs. Why? Because young children have a small singing range. They can only physically sing from about middle C to the A above middle C, so all our songs are in that range. (2) Are only 10 notes boring? NO. In selecting songs, we picked from "tried and true" songs that have withstood the test of time. We've included songs families have loved for generations such as "Get On Board" and a "Greek Dance" tune. But we have also carefully selected a few choice newly composed songs like "Hootchy Kootchy Dance" and our "Parenting Jig". You get all the fun, variety and musical diversity you enjoy and young children thrive on in one CD!(3) ...
