| | Stephanie Nakasian French Cookin' CD Stephanie Nakasian Discography of CDs
Stephanie Nakasian, a swinging singer with an appealing voice, alternates between standards (sometimes outfitted with her lyrics) and obscurities (including two composed by her pianist Hod O'Brien) on this enjoyable CD. Nakasian's lyrics to "Nuages," "Isfahan" and "Pent-Up House" are notable as is the French horn playing of Bobby Routch; bassist Nobby Totah and drummer Ray Mosca complete the group. Nakasian is a well-rounded singer, good at both scatting and interpreting ballads, and this CD gives one a strong example of her abilities. ~ Scott Yanow

$13.45 Further proof that not every weird oddity from the late '60s and early '70s had been reissued quite yet (at least as of 2003), example 134313. The story behind this album is an interesting one -- a New York-based trio, dedicated to freaking out at the dawn of the '70s, gets it together enough to record an album, but lacks the money to do more than release it as a one-sided effort with a mix at once fairly crisp and astoundingly murky. A two-sided version came out later, while ...

French Cookin' CD music
$17.09 Roz Corral, who makes her recording debut on this CD, sounds a bit like Ella Fitzgerald on the opening "Too Close for Comfort," but otherwise her warm voice is quite individual. She swings, sticks close to the melody and lyrics, and is a very capable storyteller. Her set greatly benefits from the arrangements of pianist Bruce Barth, which cast some of these songs in surprising ways, including dark versions of "Change Partners" and "Let's Face the Music and Dance." Guitarist John Hart contributed a surprising double-time arrangement of "I'll Never Be the Same," which is usually a ballad. Sprinkled throughout the set are fine solos, including a rare Steve Wilson spot on clarinet during "Anyone Can Whistle." Other highlights include a tender version of "Little Girl Blue," a touching "Say It Isn't So," and the cheerful closer, "Something's Gotta Give." Roz Corral is impressive throughout and this is an excellent debut, easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

French Cookin' songs
$22.75 "This band blew me away, hands down.' - Jimmy Jams, Reveal Online, Hollywood.Shut Up Marie is the kind of group that casts spells, leaving their audience pumped full of crazed energy. "What just happened?" said one Whisky-A-Go-Go-er, after just missing Shut Up Marie, sensing the excitement left on the unsuspecting room. On lead vocals, songwriting, and an occasional acoustic guitar on stage, Annette Marie has a special talent to get your blood going as you witness her command of an audience. She's been playing music (keyboard) since 4th grade, and started playing guitar and writing songs in 1993, after a year-long bout of depression during her attempt at a higher education, and finally realizing that academia was not the answer. Music... that was the answer for her, and remains her answer today.Packing L.A.'s best rock clubs, including the Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Troubadour, Shut Up Marie grabs the audience with awesome stage presence & amazing energy. Shut Up Marie stands alone, with a unique sound that their reviewers & fans compare to no one. Great female-led rock bands of today, including No Doubt /Gwen Stefani, Evanescence, and Hole, all get mentions when trying to find a band that Shut Up Marie can be compared to, but S.U.M. is definitely distinct from all of these bands, bringing in a heavy post-grunge influence that sets them far apart.Shut Up Marie has it all. An amazing stage show, great songwriting, and prolific… Annette herself has written over 300 songs, constant press, and radio airplay that can compete with the majors! Their 2005 full-length release “Gimmie” recently landed at #6 on the FMQB Specialty Albums chart, while their catchy alt-pop single “Short Bus” found it’s way up to #7 on the Singles chart. A four-week tenure in the FMQB Specialty Top 25 sets them apart from the rest of the indie bands, and a good chunk of the majors! Charting nationally at both CMJ (College Music Journal), and former specialty chart Fairly Underground (ALBUM NETWORK), their previous release, the 4-song EP "DEMO" laid the groundwork back in 2001 ...
