Karuna is one of the strongest efforts in Nawang Khechog's discography. It is also the Sanskrit word for compassion, a concept at the very heart of all Tibetan culture. Kitaro produced the disc and graced it with two guest performances on the synth. The rest of the music is acoustic. Khechog performed it all on ancient ethnic instruments from Tibet, Africa, Australia, Japan, and Native America. The nature sounds are field recordings, not samples. That is a lot of background information, and this CD merits such. It is full of spiritual atmospheres that weave across and through each other to form reverent soundscapes. In his time as a monk, Khechog learned how to convey his spirituality in his music. He spent four years as a hermit, and music was his only audible prayer. This deep soulful music is best when experienced alone, in contemplation or meditation. It will appeal to fans of Gregorian and Tibetan chants, Riley Lee, Klaus Wiese, and Karma Moffett. ~ Jim Brenholts
As one of Tibet's foremost contemporary musicians, Nawang celebrates life each day through the creation of his very personal music, culminating in the release of his first recording on Domo Records, titled Karuna and produced by Kitaro. On Karuna, Nawang makes full use of his newest innovation, the Universal Horn. It's a combination of Tibetan long horn and Australian Aboriginal Didgeridoo. Combining Japanese Taiko drums, Tibetan long horns, cymbals, bells, Indian drums, South American rain sticks, flutes and Tibetan chanting, Nawang shares his experience with ancient sounds and the spirituality of Tibet.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology.
Personnel includes: Nawang Khechog (vocals, Tibetan flutes, horns, didgeridoo).

Karuna album
$76.49 Digitally remastered by Stephen Innocenzi (1993, Atlantic Studios, New York).
All songs written by Ornette Coleman except "Embraceable You" (George Gershwin/Ira Gershwin), "Abstraction" and "Variants On A Theme Of Thelonius Monk" (Gunther Schuller).
BEAUTY IS A RARE THING was nominated for Best Album Notes in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
BEAUTY IS A RARE THING contains Ornette Coleman's entire surviving recorded output for the Atlantic label from 1959-1961 (a number of other sessions were recorded, but they were destroyed, along with countless other priceless Atlantic masters, in their infamous warehouse fire of the mid-1970s.) BEAUTY IS A RARE THING features over seven hours of music, six previously unreleased tracks, and contains a booklet of photos, a discography and contemporary commentaries by Ornette Coleman and a host of supporters and detractors.
This epic 6-CD set chronicles the joy and controversy that distinguished alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman's coming out party on Atlantic Records. Coleman was a transplanted Texan, a jazzman steeped in the blues, who struggled throughout the '50s on the Los Angeles scene just to find people to play with--let alone to accept his very personal sense of pitch and form. A prodigious composer, Coleman had accumulated hundreds of tunes by the time he made his first two albums for Contemporary, and began recording for Atlantic in 1959 with THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME.
As a result, this music seems suspended in time and space between epochs: casting fond backwards glances at breakthroughs of bebop ("Chronology," "Congeniality," ...
| | Nawang Khechog Quiet Mind CD (1997)
Karuna CD music
$13.25 As a child, Nawang Khechog escaped to India with his family to avoid persecution in his native Tibet. After spending a decade in a monastery, some of which was spent in utter seclusion as a hermit, Khechog emerged from his experience as a gifted ambassador of the bamboo flute. QUIET MIND marks his third release for the Sounds True label and features seamless integration of other wind instruments like the didgeridoo, ocarina, and Incan panpipes. "Year of Tibet" is placid and emotive, while "The Flight of a Shepherd Boy" takes an earnest and uplifting approach. A roaring didgeridoo on "The Power of Morality and Patience" grows into a meditative ...

| | New Monsoon Live At The Telluride Bluegrass Festival CD (2005)
Karuna album
$12.05 Five-string banjo, keyboards, electric guitar, electric bass, three percussionists (among them a tabla player) -- New Monsoon is one of those bands that could really go either way: either thrillingly eclectic or eye-rollingly earnest and mushily multi-culti. Interestingly, they manage to have it both ways on this live album, recorded at the Telluride festival in June of 2004. They do it by playing music that is genuinely exciting and complex, drawing on multiple cultural influences without sounding like someone's graduate thesis in ethnomusicology or an "eat your peas" lecture on the importance of intercultural exchange. The set-opening "Mountain Air" is New Monsoon at its finest, even if, at 12 minutes, the tune is just a bit long-winded. But then the singing starts. And while vocalist Phil Ferlino is a pretty good singer, the lyrics he sings tend strongly toward a sort of wide-eyed new ageyness that drags the music down, doing embarrassing damage to otherwise perfectly fine songs like "Painted Moon" and the country-inflected "Blue Queen." The instrumental numbers "Velvet Pouch" (with its nicely crafted guitar solos) and "Bridge ...
