| | Capitol Steps Return To Center CD Capitol Steps Discography of CDs
With their 16th release of musical political parodies and sketches, the Capitol Steps skewer everyone in sight, including the various members of President Bill Clinton's administration, members of Congress, world leaders, and various celebrities. Their normal strong suit, the musical parodies are entertaining, though they are a bit briefer than usual and not as memorable. The sketches have aged very well, especially with Jamie Zemarel as the detective Hugh Jim Bissell in the side-splitting "Where's Waldholtz?" Mike Tilford is perfect as Clinton, though Richard Paul's take on Vice President Al Gore isn't as satisfying. Elaina Newport is a scream as a fictitious feminist public radio commentator Ivanna Killmen reading "Angry Feminist Nursery Rhymes." This is an enjoyable disc, even if it isn't one of the Capitol Steps' best efforts. ~ Ken Dryden
Director: Bill Strauss.

$12.39 Even as novelty records go, All I Want for Christmas Is a Tax Increase is a chore -- gags like "It's Beginning to Look Like Warren Christopher," "Why's Madonna Kissing Santa Claus, " "Gun Nuts Boasting They Can Open Fire" and "Twelve Days of Clinton" quickly run out of steam, and it's impossible to imagine any of the songs here being even remotely funny over the course ...

Return To Center album
$11.99 The Capitol Steps recorded these live performances around the time of the 1994 presidential election, though they cover a lot of ground away from politics. Unfortunately, the sequencing isn't as strong as on many of their releases, jumping back and forth between a variety of subjects without providing much continuity. That said, some of the non-political tracks are very funny: "Euro Pest" (where two arrogant Frenchmen chase off tourists from the rather unsuccessful EuroDisney park), "You Can Suture Yourself at Home" and "You Must Have Been a Biotech Baby" (which cover the future of health care), and "Time for Killin' Barney" (an Irish jig that recommends the demise of the idiotic public TV character). But the political musical spoofs are just not as memorable as on many of the group's releases, in part because there isn't as much emphasis on mimicking their respective targets. Therefore, this CD cannot be considered one of the Capitol Steps' essential recordings. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Capitol Steps Whole Newt World CD (1995)
Return To Center CD music
$11.99 The 15th album from the popular political parodists Capitol Steps consists of material performed by the troupe in late 1994 and early '95, just after the mid-term elections swept Newt Gingrich and his Republican disciples into Congressional control for the first time in 30 years. The new Speaker of the House and his Contract with America are the source of the most incisive comedy on this collection, including the Aladdin-inspired title song and an ingenious Mary Poppins parody, "Supercallousmeanandnastyrightwinglegislation." In a similar vein, "Bye, Bye Big Bird" takes on the political dispute over PBS funding, and "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Foley" is a hilarious sendoff for the deposed Democratic Speaker of the House. The second half of the album is less consistent, focusing heavily on the O.J. Simpson murder trial, then in its early stages. The jokes about Kato Kalin, F. Lee Bailey and Judge Ito tend to be less sophisticated and don't hold up as well over time as the political satire. And if the zingy lyrics by Elaina Newport and ...

$11.45 If you want to hear the real roots of Kenyan benga music, then the eight-member Kenge Kenge is the place. Resolutely acoustic, they hew closely to the tradition rather than the modern electric style, singing in Luo. The material is a mix of the traditional, such as "Owang' Winyo" and the self-composed, with cuts like "Otenga," which is based on a Luo dance style. With fiddles, flutes and horns, as well as the native nyangile, it's a glorious noise, with plenty of riveting vocals. To be fair, it's probably not something to draw a large ...
