Best Of Bourbon Street Blues album
$11.99 Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of ...

| | Nod To Bob CD (2001)
Best Of Bourbon Street Blues music CDs
$14.35 You might not expect much from a Dylan tribute album limited to the artists of one small label, but if so, you're in for a surprise: This CD turns out to be every bit as inspired as anything on the all-star Madison Square Garden tribute that marked Dylan's 30th year in the music business. One reason is that the artists on the Red House label (which happens to be based in the state Dylan hails from) prove extremely well-suited to the task and well-matched to the material. Another is that that material is just so darn wonderful. There's no way a single disc could do justice to the mind-bogglingly large Dylan catalog; this could have been a ten- or 15-CD set and the quality wouldn't have flagged one bit. In fact, this collection doesn't even touch on such career highlights as Blood on the Tracks; it focuses mostly on the 1960s when, as the liner notes point out, most of the artists here were in their formative years as performers and Dylan was their major musical influence. Of course, if you have to pick one Dylan period, the '60s era isn't exactly a bad choice. The results here are stunning. While there's not a weak track on the disk, standouts include Suzy and Maggie Roche's ...
| | Catdaddy Jones Late Night In The Dog House CD (2003)
Best Of Bourbon Street Blues songs
$12.85 Catdaddy Jones, a busman's holiday for four veteran New York sidemen, Geoff Worton, M.D. Meyer, Steve Merola, and Paul Bisbano, is a straight-ahead blues-rock band in a familiar style. The promotional sheet for their debut album, Late Night in the Doghouse, says, "Think the Asbury Jukes with a grittier singer and Jeff Beck on guitar!," and among the "key selling points" is this: "Record will appeal to fans of Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Memphis soul and urban blues." But these comparisons are not quite on the mark. In fact, if one were to ...

| | Chris Thomas King Rise CD (2006)
Best Of Bourbon Street Blues CD music
$13.05 New Orleans musician Chris Thomas King lost both a home and a recording studio when Hurricane Katrina had landfall at the close of summer in 2005, and it's hardly startling that his album Rise takes Katrina and the devastating aftermath of the storm as a central theme. The result is a tremendously elegiac outing, and even when King goes up-tempo, as he does on a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," the song itself is all about incalculable loss and the incredible indifference of contemporary America to its own personal history. Things are drowning and washing away in song after song on Rise, and King isn't afraid to name names. In ...

Best Of Bourbon Street Blues CD music
$24.95 Bill Withers' first two albums were arguably his best works, his most personal and unaffected music with a distinctive sound by virtue of their lean production, especially his debut, Just As I Am. At the turn of the 1960s into the 1970s, he was a unique presence, as we're reminded by this Raven Records two-LP-on-one-CD package. ...
