Unlike its companion volume RIDE THE WILD TOM-TOM, the outtakes compilation PARIS AVENUE focuses on the end of the dBs' career. By 1988, when these tracks were recorded, founder Chris Stamey and bassist Gene Holder had already left the band, leaving the dBs in the control of guitarist/keyboardist Peter Holsapple and drummer Will Rigby. As a result, PARIS AVENUE resembles less the clean, compressed power pop of STANDS FOR DECIBELS and more the gently loping, country and folk-inflected pop of Holsapple's Continental Drifters and Rigby's work with his wife Amy. There's also a goofy sense of humor on display on such tracks as the manic "Huey Dewey and Louie Louie" or "Bald Headed Baby." New members Eric Peterson and Jeff Beninato don't attempt to copy Stamey and Holder. And, while the results may be slightly less distinctive than earlier dB's albums, PARIS AVENUE would have made an excellent farewell had it been released when it was recorded.

Paris Avenue
$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session is the document. ...
| | Velvet Crush Soft Sounds CD (2002)
Paris Avenue
$13.49 The Velvet Crush's fifth studio album starts off not with the usual chiming rush of loud electric guitars but with a rolling piano line and a gently plucked bass. The duo behind the band, Paul Chastain and Ric Menck, have drastically revamped their trademark power pop style and stripped back the teenage wall of guitars to reveal a softer, more adult heart. There is still the occasional chiming guitar, like on the most Velvet Crush-sounding track, "Don't Take Me Down," but most of the songs are based around piano or acoustic guitar. The vocals are also a lot less excited than ...
| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Paris Avenue
$9.89 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines ...
| | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005) (Import) Australia
Paris Avenue
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Paris Avenue
$17.75 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good ...
| | Raga For Peter Walker CD (2006) Digipak
Paris Avenue
$10.09 Many of the legends of acoustic guitar in the 20th century have already passed on -- John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Ali Farka Toure. Due partially to his spare recording career, Peter Walker's own reputation has not always been as well known as those of said giants, but his own influence has been considerable. A Raga for Peter Walker -- a tribute album that, in a nice touch, not only consists of work composed by its contributors rather than ...

| | Total CD (1996)
Paris Avenue
$14.75 One of the early feathers in the cap of the Bad Boy Entertainment empire, the female trio Total got their start backing the Notorious B.I.G. before releasing their self-titled debut in 1996. Unlike the sleek urban contemporary sound of acts like Destiny's Child, Total was driven by classic funk grooves and sassy attitude.
The singers, Kima, Keisha, and Pam, each have their own distinctive style, ...
