| | Li'L Abner CD (2002) Original Broadway Cast; Bonus Tracks
At The Palladium songs
$8.99 Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened on November 15, 1956, it became the only stage work with which Mercer was associated to turn a profit, running 693 performances. Actually, the score isn't as strong as that for one of Mercer's flops, St. Louis Woman, but it is appropriate to the subject matter. The songs "Jubilation T. Cornpone," "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands," and "Progress Is the Root of All Evil" wittily capture Capp's sense of humor and dim view of politics. There are also some attractive romantic ballads, notably "Namely You" and "Love in a Home," both of which became minor hits. Edith "Edie" Adams and Stubby Kaye lead a cast of unknowns who give their all to the show's broad comedy. A key element of Lil' Abner's success was the staging and choreography of director Michael Kidd, ...

At The Palladium CD music
$13.99 The diminutive French pianist Michel Petrucciani continues to display immense talent at the keyboard, but for a change, he's turned to another musician to arrange his original material. Seasoned arranger and superb trombonist Bob Brookmeyer makes a major contribution, adding very different shadings than the leader would have chosen. Rich unison lines flesh out "35 Seconds of Music and More," and Brookmeyer creates an especially melancholy mood ...
| | Glenn Miller Glen Island Special: Live Recordings 1939-1940 CD (2002)
At The Palladium music CDs
$17.99 This document of Glenn Miller's radio broadcasts from the Glen Island Casino in late 1939 and early 1940 is good -- in fact, great -- as far as it goes; but it would be a lot better if more of the performances were complete. It's easy to luxuriate in the "swell" arrangement of "St. Louis Blues," for example, with its gorgeous reed and trumpet parts, but it would be easier to recommend it to casual fans if it didn't end so abruptly. On the other hand, that was one of the technical limits of recording radio broadcasts at the time, and listeners should be grateful that some form of recording was made of these performances and has become available. The fidelity is better than one would expect for live performances of this vintage, even off the radio, and one can fully comprehend how Miller and his band built their national (and ultimately international) following from these broadcast performances. The live ambience is bracing, and among many other virtues, the trombone section reveals itself as an awesome ensemble on "Glen Island Special," and even the vocal numbers hold up. And to be fair, the producers have been honest and forthright enough so that they've listed the tracks that are short or otherwise flawed on the outside ...
