Moon River: Two O'Clock Jazz Band at the University of North Texas Wild it's called and wild they are! And so was everyone in San Juan where they made these recordings. Mardi Gras was swinging and everyone was swaying with the mood. But that spirit is with PHIL MOORE, III and the five other members of THE AFRO-LATIN SOULTET whenever and wherever they play. And there are MOISES OBLIGACION, conga drummer and ex-member of The Afro Blues Quintet; CHAUNCY LOCKE, trumpeter who stretches back to days with the famed Charlie Parker; VANCE MATLOCK, bass player formerly with Aretha Franklin; LEROY BROOKS, drummer of Curtis Amy fame; and JACK FULKS, the alto sax and flute man who played with Chico Hamilton and the Afro Blues Quintet and who co-composed three of the tunes in this album. Leader PHIL MOORE is, of course, the pianist. He led his own Latino group when in high school, but it was a long time later, after he had attended the San Francisco Conservatory Of Music and the Burklee School Of Music in Boston, that he visited Puerto Rico and renewed his old acquaintance with Latin music. Includes liner notes by Jon Ginoli, Paul Budin and Miles Harvey. What set the Outnumbered apart from the countless jangle-pop bands who emerged in the post-R.E.M. era was not simply the quality of Jon Ginoli's melodic and spiky songs, but also the deep conviction of his lyrics -- whether tackling matters of life and death (the psychedelia-tinged anti-war diatribe "Cover Me with Flowers") or those closer to home ("You Need a Babysitter," a biting attack on arrested adolescence), there's an idealism and intelligence to the band's music which never fails to hit the mark. Most profound are Ginoli's explorations of sexual dynamics, with tracks like "She's Gonna Take It Out on Me" and "The Other Way Around" exposing the darkest impulses of the male psyche with bitter honesty. Moon River: Two O'Clock Jazz Band at the University of North Texas Ameted is an eccentric mix of Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, and Rush. Their musical style runs from acoustic classic rock to heavy metal, ultimately striving for a progressive rock flavor. Tales of a Circus is a concept album that embraces this musical journey. A chance meeting from a mutual friend brought Scott and Brian together in 1994 when Brian was working on a solo project.
