Got The Whole Night CD music
$9.59 Paul Brill's debut album Halve the Light straddles the line between contemporary folk and adult alternative singer/songwriters, spiked with a hint of alt-country and neo-traditional folk. Thing is, that description makes it sound sort of studied or forced, maybe even a little precious, which this isn't at all. This is a warm, lucid album, with an intimate vibe and songs that are endearingly melodic, while being slyly lyrical -- these are nice, low-key songs delivered simply and charmingly, fitting Brill's friendly, unassuming vocals and delivery perfectly. By and large, the livelier numbers stick out the first time through -- whether it's the Neil Young-ish crawl of "Maybelline" or the rollicking "Caroline" -- but upon further plays, the slow, stately ballads work their way into the consciousness. And that's the thing about Halve the Light -- it may not be a knockout upon the first spin, but it's certainly engaging and it's subtly persuasive upon each successive listen. A real nice first effort that whets the appetite for the next record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
New Yorker Paul Brill certainly chose the road less taken for his alt-country "Caroline," which meshes iron-clad bluegrass with downtown savvy and a lyric that dishes pain and love - with a whimsical wink for those listen beneath the surface. You'll hear everything from violin, pedal steel, and cello to banjo, dobro and mandolin served up on his Halve the Light, as Brill reaches back to a day when pride was in the performance, not in pigeonholing a demographic to the lowest common denominator. Brill's peers may be digging Staind and Defalt, but this talented guy need answer to no one. For those wondering, O, Brother Where Art Thou?, he's right here. Search Brill out at paulbrill.com. - Chuck Taylor, Billboard Magazine. April 13, 2002-Critic's Choice - New releases, regardless of chart potential, highly recommended because of their musical merit. As the clear, bittersweet cry of pedal steel opens Halve the Light, marooned atop slow drums and acoustic guitar, it's tempting to piegeonhole New York City singer/songwriter Paul Brill as just another alt-country heartbreaker. But you'd only be half-right. The man also happens to know a few things about rock and pop, making his eight song debut a richly textured statement that buoys his late night lamplight sound with enough hooks to carry you through ...

$16.45 Collection of 13 tracks from 1992 recording sessions, including the 14+ minute title track! Jordan Macarus and Co. journey into spacey progressive territory on this one and the results are fantastic!-----REVIEW-----WINTERHAWK - "Wind From The Sun" CD '03 (Monster, US) - I'm not sure whether the majority of people who read this page are aware of my love affair with the guitar work of Jordan Macarus. See, Jordan is a guy from Illinois who, with the release of one solitary album in 1982 by his band WINTERHAWK, basically blew up any list of guitar heroes I'd ever concocted. Combining the sweet Strat sound of vintage Blackmore and the hard-edged exploratory vibe of Steve Morse, he infused that into the "Revival" album and produced a mammoth hard rock epic that staggered my imagination to the point of making it my favourite obscure record ...
