 | SCHOOLS HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE 1955! Blackboard Jungle video This well written, well acted 'fifties-era film shows that little has changed in America's big city schools in sixty years - they are still in crisis! Glenn Ford plays a just-out-of-college WWII Navy vet who chose to become a teacher, beginning his first teaching job in a poverty-stricken inner city high school. A shockingly-young Sidney Poitier leads Ford's classroom filled with minority student/juvenile delinquents in a state of constant anarchy and rebellion; Veteran teachers warn him to "never turn your back on the class"; and the dictatorial school Principal doesn't want to hear about any problems. Ford stops the rape of an attractive new teacher by a student on the first day of the school year, winning her unwelcome romantic attention at a time when his newly-pregnant wife is experiencing pangs of jealosy; a fellow teacher unwisely treats the class like human beings and has his prize record collection smashed for his reward. He and Ford are viciously mugged after school by a gang of students. Dozens of other high school pranks abound. All in all, a compelling film that leaves the viewer with a feeling of deja vou, for - despite the billions and billions of dollars spent on education since 1955 when this film was made - the school depicted in "Blackboard Jungle" is depressingly similar to center city high schools in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami or New York. | A look at the movie Blackboard Jungle I have always liked Glenn Ford and just about anything he's done. I seen this movie years ago and liked how the producer was able to carry the theme of bad guy/good guy in this movie. A look at how things were back in the late 50's/ early 60's is what this movie implies. Good entertainment and classic Glenn Ford acting makes this movie easy to watch and enjoy. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in old classic movies. It was interesting to note the similarities between Glenn Ford in this movie and his movie 5 years later Cimarron, another great Glenn Ford classic. His even-tempered, soft-spoken ways is what made Glenn Ford what he was. By dennyfrey (Medford WI USA) This review is for a different format. |
| Everything Changes. Everything Remains The Same A top class melodrama with a social message. Glenn Ford and a cast of pros deliver the goods with the finished product well paced and often compelling. Plus a piece of Rock history. The first real shot across popular music's bows by Rock 'n' Roll. By littleteddys (Brisbane, Australia) This review is for a different format. |
