Breezin' Along/On the Sunny Side collects two of the Four Lads' mid-'50s albums onto one CD. Aside from "Breezin' Along With the Breeze," neither of these albums include definitive songs from the Lads, but their smooth, appealing versions of standards such as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Sentimental Journey," and "The Way You Look Tonight" showcase the group's expressive harmonies just as well. Recommended for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the Four Lads' catalog than their greatest-hits collections. ~ Heather Phares

| | Introducing The Beau Brummels CD (1965)
Breezin' Along/On The Sunny Side music CDs
$11.79 This reissue of the Beau Brummels' debut album includes two added tracks--the 1965 single "Good Time Music" and a demo version of "Just A Little."
Originally released on Autumn (103). Includes liner notes by Jud Cost.
The Beau Brummels' 1965 debut, with a sound hinting at jangle pop, folk rock, and proto-psychedelia, is a cozy slice of 1960's musical Americana. The San Francisco quintet borrowed much in style and structure from British Invasion bands, and in retrospect the Brummels' music compares favorably to many of their English contemporaries'. In part this has to do with the strength of the band's original material, all of which was written and arranged by guitarist and founding member Ron Elliott.
Elliot's songs, whether upbeat rockers such as "Stick Like Glue," or moody, minor key numbers such as "I'll Make You Cry," are powered by finely honed melodic hooks. The group's soaring, complex harmonies and expansive feel seem to foreshadow both the folk rock of The Byrds and the San Francisco sound of the late '60s. Most notably, INTRODUCING includes the Brummels' biggest hits: "Still in Love With You Baby," the moody "Cry Just a Little," and their best known song, "Laugh, Laugh," making it a fine introduction to the group's compelling '60s sound. Rock trivia fans will be delighted to learn that the album was originally produced by Sylvester Stewart (a.k.a. Sly Stone).
Okay, so the Beau Brummels were a little contrived. Sure, the name was meant ...

Released only months after RAMONES, the Ramones' second album pales slightly in comparison to its stone-classic predecessor--but only slightly. LEAVE HOME contains enough all-time Ramones anthems--"Commando," "Pinhead" (which introduces the legendary "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant), and "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," to name only three--that ...

| | John Coltrane Coltrane's Sound CD (1960) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Breezin' Along/On The Sunny Side songs
$28.15 The October 1960 sessions which comprise COLTRANE'S SOUND present a portrait of the John Coltrane Quartet in its infancy, yet many of the mature elements which were to distinguish the group during its primacy are already in place. COLTRANE'S SOUND was among the last releases to emerge from his Atlantic sessions, but, in some ways, it's among the most satisfying.
John Coltrane's search for the ideal rhythm section coincided with his transition from hard bop to the emerging modal stylings first suggested by Miles Davis on KIND OF BLUE. Elvin Jones' polyrhythmic inventions exploited the tension between triplets and eighth notes, and with his unique cymbal sound and powerful technique, Jones perfected a new rhythmic style of phrasing. Pianist McCoy Tyner offered a rich harmonic palette and a supple lyric dimension. He was able to play convincingly ...
