(vocals, flute); Premik (soprano saxophone, alto flute); David Hubbard (soprano saxophone); Marcus Miller (synthesizer, guitar, bass, background vocals); Joy Askew, Robert Thiele, Jr. ( synthesizer); Yogi Horton, Buddy Williams (drums); Steve Thornton (percussion).
In 2001, Collectables reissued two later works by jazz pianist Lonnie Liston Smith. Dreams of Tomorrow (originally issued on Columbia in 1983) definitely shows him heading toward smooth jazz/quiet storm territory, complete with the warbled croonings of Donald Smith. Silhouettes (1984) sees a further move in that direction, with a bit more R&B influence thrown in for good measure. ~ Rob Theakston

When Lonnie Liston Smith left the Miles Davis band in 1974 for a solo career, he was, like so many of his fellow alumni, embarking on a musical odyssey. For a committed fusioneer, he had no idea at the time that he was about to enter an abyss that it would take him the better part of two decades to return from. Looking back upon his catalog from the period, this is the only record that stands out -- not only from his own work, but also from every sense of the word: It is fully a jazz album, and a ...
| | Lonnie Liston Smith Rejuvenation/Make Someone Happy CD (2001)
Dreams Of Tomorrow/Silhouettes songs
$10.69 In early 2001, Collectables reissued two very different Lonnie Liston Smith albums back to back on the same 71-minute CD: 1985's Rejuvenation and 1986's Make Someone Happy. While Rejuvenation favors the type of ethereal, gently funky fusion and crossover jazz that Smith is best known for, Make Someone Happy offers something that ...

| | Franz Koglmann L'Heure Bleue CD (1991)
Dreams Of Tomorrow/Silhouettes album
$17.45 L'HEURE BLEUE features Franz Koglmann in both the Monoblue Quartet and Duo Koglmann-Mengelberg.
This set is Koglmann in miniature. Leaving the compositions for his gargantuan yet soulfully swinging and improvising machine the Pipetet behind, Koglmann functions in two much smaller settings here: as part of a quartet, and in duet with Misha Mengelberg. The quartet showcases the talents of Tony Coe on tenor and clarinet, Burkhard Stangl on guitar, and the great Klaus Koch on bass alongside Koglmann's trumpet and flügelhorn. This intimacy, this quiet brilliance and restraint that Koglmann shows here on his works -- some of which (the title cut and "Slow Fox") were initially written for and performed by the Pipetet -- is a statement not only of how versed the man is in the traditions of jazz and classical music but just how aware he is of his own mates' musical strengths. His rearrangement of standards such as "My Old Flame," "Moon Dreams," "Night and Day," and others reveals his willingness to find new colors in the ...
