The world is filled with gloomy goth bands, and it can be pretty hard to tell them apart. Claire Voyant distinguishes itself not by means of a unique approach or new ideas, but by having the best singer in the genre, the golden-throated Victoria Lloyd. Despite moustache-twirling song titles like "Eventide," "Elysium," "Iolite," and, heaven knows, the title track, the music itself is refreshingly free of pretense. Synthesizers and drum programs, courtesy of Chris Ross, provide a soft bed for the shimmering guitars of Benjamin Fargen and for Lloyd's crystalline voice, and the melodies, while never exactly catchy, are always sweet enough to hold your attention and counteract the vague darkness of the music. There's more than a hint of the Cocteau Twins in the gently lovely "Love the Giver" and in the guitar part to "Time and the Maiden," while "Elysium" sounds a bit like a less pretentious This Mortal Coil or a much, much less pretentious Dead Can Dance. This is an impressive effort from a very promising young band. ~ Rick Anderson

Gothic/PopCMJ (2/19/01, p.14) - "...A combination of dramatic pop orchestrations and the captivating voice of Victoria Lloyd, who does not need excessive flanging or tweaking to sound heavenly and beguiling....This is the kind of music that 4AD might still be releasing had it maintained its original 80s course..." Time And The Maiden album
$12.79 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and ...

$13.69 The second Pulp album, 1986's FREAKS sees several changes from the band's debut of three years prior. The overall mood is much more sinister and aggressive (the album's subtitle is "Ten Songs about Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation, and Holding Hands."), alternately recalling such early Smiths tracks as "Suffer Little Children" and some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Carny."
FREAKS also finds main lyricist Jarvis Cocker handing over the vocal reins to guitarist Russell Senior on two particularly creepy songs. The first, "Fairground," opens the album with a swirling tale of a freak show, while the second, "Anorexic ...
