Claire Voyant is a band that has just about everything -- good tunes; a female singer with a sweet, luxuriant voice; textures that are dark without being oppressively gloomy; a great guitarist. The only thing missing from their music is compelling beats, which is why Time Again (which features remixes by various artists of tracks from the band's Time and the Maiden album) may be the best Claire Voyant album there is. Granted, not all of the remixes do more for the tunes in question than make them dancefloor ready -- Francis E. Preve's ho-hum trance mix of "Iolite" is a case in point -- but most of them do bring new and interesting ideas to the original material. Highlights include Front 242's muscular and eerie take on "Eventide," an excellent realization of "Mercy" by cut.rate.box that alternates club beats with a sort of modified trip-hop groove, and a bracing drum'n'bass mix of "Bittersweet" by Love Spirals Downwards. The combination of solid beats with Victoria Lloyd's gorgeous voice and the band's naturally wispy ambience is very satisfying. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

$12.79 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi ...

The time machine hatch glides smoothly open... Johann looks at the lighted display: he has landed in the early twenty-first century. "Good," he thinks. "It is the age of electronic instruments. What will my music sound like in this new Millennium?" BACH TO THE FUTURE is an exciting classical/jazz quartet, transforming the famous classical melodies of Bach and other composers into jazz, Latin, and other contemporary rhythms. The four musicians play cutting edge instruments, including the Drumitar, the MIDI electric violin, and synthesizers. They've sold over 100,000 CDs on their own label, Time Machine Records, and have opened for David Sanborn, Peter Cincotti, the Rippingtons, Eric Marienthal, Al DiMeola, Stanley Jordan, David Benoit, Michael Franks, and the Yellowjackets. In addition to concerts, the group performs master classes and music education clinics, and has several instructional books and CDs published by Mel Bay Publications.
