| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Album 2 CD music
$11.65 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition ...

| | Cesaria Evora Cesaria CD (1995) (Import) Bel; United Kingdom
Album 2 music CDs
$12.65 CESARIA EVORA was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
CESARIA was originally released in 1995 on Nonesuch as CESARIA EVORA.
On this self-titled album, her first for Nonesuch, the Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora delivers another batch of 12 strong songs. She is accompanied on this record by various guitarists and percussionists, with the occasional violin and accordion thrown into the mix. This added instrumentation supports Evora's singing (the undisputed focus of the record) marvelously. As usual, her phrasing is exquisite, her voice rising and falling like the tide, caressing the contours of the simple melodies. The charm of Evora's singing is that she sounds like someone's grandmother, singing to herself as she goes about her day's chores. It is this hominess that makes her so endearing, so magically restful. And with lyrics such as "you must work hard/so that tomorrow/you're not in need," the grandmother connection becomes even more obvious. This ...

| | Putumayo Presents: Christmas Around The World CD (2003)
Album 2 album
$12.15 2000's World Christmas was certainly one of the most entertaining and enlightening collections of Christmas carols in quite a while, so the similar theme of Putumayo's Christmas Around the World is no surprise. The problem is, the label's latest Yuletide set can't figure out whether it's a sequel or a reissue. The two albums share four songs, including tracks from Pepe Castillo, Steve Schuch, and Michael Doucet. Additionally, Cuba L.A.'s "Deck the Hall" comes from the band's 2000 effort, Navidad Cubana. While the track list is puzzling, Around the World is still a spectacular set. From Martinique comes banjoist Kali, who performs the silent standard "Douce Nuit"; meanwhile, Clifford Sylvain's New York Twoubadou turns in "Joyeux Noël," a song in the upbeat Haitian troubadour style that fairly bursts with delightful energy. And though Schuch and his Night Heron Consort ...

$35.49 | | Ska Cubano !Ay Caramba! CD (2006)
Album 2 music CDs
$10.69 Ska Cubano excel at a style of music that never really existed until they invented it. What they've done is to take Jamaica's pre-reggae ska beat, mix it up with the intrinsically danceable Cuban son and mambo styles, sprinkle in some Colombian cumbia, and filter it all through that whimsical (although they are not jokesters by any means), mildly ironic sensibility that only Brits could muster. As bands such as Madness and Bad Manners did during the first British ska revival, so does Ska Cubano do now, only upping the ante with a couple more Caribbean flavors and executing it within an inch of perfection. The band revolves around the British producer Peter Scott and singer Natty Bo (of the U.K. ska band the Top Cats), who traveled to Cuba and recruited a singer calling himself Beny Billy (in honor of his idol, Cuban legend Beny Moré), but whose real name is Juan Manuel Villy. From there they fleshed the band out with both Cuban and British musicians and cut a self-titled debut album, which is now followed up with this equally charming and ceaselessly jaunty sequel. If ...

| | Lord Belial Black Curse CD (2008)
Album 2 CD music
$12.25 Lord Belial favored a blend of black metal and death metal (more black metal than death metal) in the 1990s and early 2000s, but their 2006 recording Revelation: The 7th Seal was black metal all the way. Instead of being mostly black metal, Revelation: The 7th Seal was totally black metal -- and the Swedish band continues in that direction on its 2008 release, The Black Curse. Like Revelation: The 7th Seal, The Black Curse is an album that is obviously aimed at people who like their black metal with a lot of nuance. No one will accuse Black Curse of sounding like adult contemporary; this is intense, hard-hitting, occult-obsessed music that rocks forcefully and aggressively. And you certainly won't find song titles like "Antichrist Reborn," "Trumpets of Doom," and "Primordial Incantation" on a Celine Dion album. But at the same time, The Black Curse is not an exercise in loudness for the sake of loudness. On this 52-minute CD, melody, nuance, musicality, and songcraft are as important ...
