This limited-edition two-disk 40-song compilation is made up of two solo albums cut for Atlantic Records, Love Ballads and Clyde, as well as The Mercury Sessions Live (aka Live at the Apollo), which included three bonus studio tracks. Clyde McPhatter recorded for MGM in between Atlantic and Mercury, but none of those tracks are included. McPhatter fans will note that his 1962 Top Ten hit, "Lover Please" (his most successful Mercury recording and final Top 40 hit), is missing, as is "Seven Days," his first solo effort, which made the pop charts but not this collection. So this is not the be all and end all McPhatter collection, but there are some pleasant surprises for those who are only in sync with the smooth balladeer's hits, as well as two versions of his biggest solo hit, "A Lover's Question" (the original and a live rendition). There are 11 live selections and the three bonus studio cuts, "I Told Myself a Lie," "Let's Try Again," and "Twice as Nice," comprising the second disk, which was recorded at Harlem's Apollo Theater with MC Bill Murray handling the intro. The clean CD sound is mesmerizing; backed by an ample orchestra, McPhatter does solid performances of "Lucille," "Second Window, Second Floor," "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" (his favorite recording), and others. These are excellent pop/R&B recordings that should have made McPhatter an international star, popular television performer, and icon in Vegas, but it never really happened like that, as he mainly worked the chitlin circuit. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Atlantic & Mercury Sessions album
$10.59 Tony Orlando's early years as a teen idol may have yielded only a handful of minor hits, but his later fame with Dawn guaranteed that they would eventually be resurrected. "Bless You" was the biggest of Orlando's early charters, inching into the Top 15 in 1961. That song, as well as his other Epic recordings from 1961-1963, exemplify the teen pop style of the era with sparkling arrangements of pizzicato strings, a sweet vocal chorus, and other sugary treats for the ear. On "Lonely Am I," even words of loneliness seem heavenly when crooned to the angelic tones of a harp. Orlando placed seven of his Epic singles in Billboard's Top 135, and all but one are anthologized on Bless You and Seventeen Other Great Hits. British ...
| | Wanda Jackson Queen Of Rockabilly CDs (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Atlantic & Mercury Sessions CD music
$16.95 Recorded between 1956 and 1963. Includes liner notes by Rob Finnis.
Digitally remastered by Duncan Cowell (Sound Mastering Limited).
Ace Records' Queen of Rockabilly is such a good idea for a Wanda Jackson collection that it's astonishing that it didn't get put together and released until 2000 -- or that Bear Family Records, which is no slouch when it comes to distilling down certain aspects and angles of American country and rock & roll stars, didn't do it first. It should have been out a lot earlier, in the 1970s -- that would have saved hundreds of listeners (maybe thousands, around the world) having to buy, borrow, or steal her old LPs and singles, so we could isolate and distill down her rockabilly and rock & roll tracks onto open-reel tape or audio cassette. Compiler/annotator Rob Finnis allows the songs to jump across seven years, back and forth, pulling together the strands and threads of this side of Jackson's work into a killer collection of 30 songs, clocking in at less than 70 minutes. And running through the rough and raucous rock & roll sounds is the enigma ...

Why does Phish have such an uncanny knack for constructing amazingly dynamic eight-minute jam-journeys upon a few verses about little animals with funny names? At times reminiscent of the darker songs on RIFT, THE STORY OF THE GHOST is a shadowy assembly of songs about dream-makers, phantom princes, listless ...

| | Avishai Cohen After The Big Rain CD (2007) Digipak
Atlantic & Mercury Sessions CD music
$13.45 Avishai Cohen's After the Big Rain is an ambitious, earthy and endlessly surprising work that finds the trumpeter/composer melding post-bop, avant-garde jazz, African folk music and electric soundscapes. Having been a force on the downtown NYC jazz scene since the '90s, Cohen has made a name for himself as an adventurous, forward-thinking musician performing in various ensembles that mixed everything from klezmer and free jazz to swinging hard bop and post-rock. Here, Cohen takes his world music inclinations one step further partnering with West African vocalist/guitarist Lionel Loueke on a series of loosely connected pieces that strongly feature Loueke's moody singing and percussive guitar. Interestingly, the album often sounds ...
