This release from Collectables features a pair of out of print Woody Herman LPs on one CD: The Jazz Swinger and Music for Tired Lovers, both originally issued on Columbia in the mid-'60s. While Music for Tired Lovers features mediocre versions of pop standards, The Jazz Swinger should be avoided altogether, unless hearing Herman sing selections from the Al Jolson catalog sounds appealing. ~ Al Campbell

Jazz Swinger/Music For Tired Lovers album
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen ...

Jazz Swinger/Music For Tired Lovers CD music
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and ...

| | Classical Jazz Quartet Play Tchaikovsky CD (2006)
Jazz Swinger/Music For Tired Lovers music CDs
$14.39 Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite has previously been arranged in a jazz setting by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, but Bob Belden's charts for the superb Classical Jazz Quartet (Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Ron Carter, and Lewis Nash) are also worth investigating. Things start off a bit slow with "The Swingin' Nut," which really doesn't swing due to Belden's overreliance on a vamp behind the solos rather than having the musicians improvise upon its theme. Better are the driving post-bop setting of "Marche Touche" and "Blues à la Russe" (a splendid reworking of "Russian Dance"), which showcase Barron and Harris, along with the introspective "Groove of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and the breezy, swinging "Vaunce of the Flowers." The musicianship is at a high ...
