Carnivore: Peter (vocals, bass); Marc (guitar, background vocals); Louie (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn and Pyramid Sound, Ithaca, New York. Hardcore thrash, New York style, it has a heavy punk influence and harsh lyrics about the world we live in, including some that still hold up today (such as the frightening "Race War" and "Inner Conflict"). Somewhat like a punker version of Slayer, this is their second (and best) album. ~ John Book

| | Christian Death Only Theatre Of Pain CD (1982)
Retaliation
$9.89 Collaboration between singer/poet Rozz Williams & Rikk Agnew. 16 tracks. 1982.
Christian Death: Rozz Williams (vocals); Rikk Agnew (guitar); James McGearty (bass); George Belanger (drums). Additional personnel: Eva, Ron (background vocals). The 1984 debut album from goth metal mongers Christian Death can, in retrospect, be seen as something of a landmark release. A trendsetting disc in its merging of a creepy gothic sensibility and heavy metal, not to mention its stridently controversial (yet subtly tongue-in-cheek) assaults on the Christian religion and conventional morality, ONLY THEATER OF PAIN influenced the countless goth, death, and black metal bands that heard it. While lyrics about Lucifer, sodomy, necrophilia, and church hypocrisy (like "Burnt Offerings" and "Cavity: First Communion") may seem commonplace now, they weren't in 1984. But it's the gloom-and-doom atmosphere here, the creepy dungeon feel of the music, that makes the greater impression, and puts Christian Death on the map as forerunners in their genre. And thus was American goth rock born. Perhaps an extreme statement, as one could argue .45 Grave beat Christian Death to the punch, if with a lot more intentional humor. Still, it's about the only thing that can be said upon listening to Christian ...

$23.29 At a time when most of the first wave of Norwegian black metal bands are long gone, Darkthrone has become the senior figures of this particular subgenre almost by default; they're like the Rolling Stones of death metal. And much like the Rolling Stones around the time of Some Girls and Emotional Rescue, Darkthrone now seems to be caught between staying true to their original sound and adapting to the commercial marketplace. The album's first single, "Too Old, Too Cold" is easily the most immediately accessible song the band has ever done, sounding more like American hardcore punks the Misfits than anyone else, and elsewhere "Graveyard Slut" and "Whiskey Funeral" add to the album's punky feel. Longtime fans might grouse about the somewhat diluted sound of the album, but the shift in emphasis is both subtle and effective. Rather than simply going through the black metal motions, The Cult Is Alive is one of Darkthrone's most satisfying recent albums. ~ Stewart Mason
Never failing to keep the creative wheels turning, Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone are back with their ...

Mountain: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Felix Pappalardi (vocals, bass); Steve Knight (keyboards); Corky Laing (drums). Counting Leslie West's July 1969 solo album, Flowers of Evil was the fourth album in 28 months for West and Felix Pappalardi's Mountain, and the pace was catching up with them: Flowers of Evil was only half of a studio album with five new songs, its second side filled up with a live 25-minute rock & roll medley and encore of Mountain's sole Top 40 hit, "Mississippi Queen." This was unmistakable evidence that Mountain had run their course. There would be live albums, compilations, and reunions over the succeeding years, but Flowers of Evil marked the creative end of a surprisingly short-lived enterprise. [Originally released in November 1971 as Windfall 5501, Flowers of Evil was reissued on April 16, 1996, as Columbia/Legacy 52749.] ~ William Ruhlmann Mountain's second release of 1971 (and fourth release in only a two year span), FLOWERS OF EVIL, would turn out to be the band's final studio release before starting a cycle of splitting up and reuniting. Comprising equal ...
