It's hard enough for most musicians to avoid the sophomore slump, but when the artist in question is the son of one of music's all-time legends.well, the record better be good. Luckily, Muddy Waters progeny Big Bill Morganfield shows that his initial recorded effort was far from a fluke, with RAMBLIN' MIND delivering a slab of confident, danceable urban blues that does his daddy proud. Possessing a vocal approach and timbre that is sometimes an uncanny ringer for Waters's distinctively clipped style, Big Bill mixes hard Chicago style blues ("Highway 69") with slightly jazzier Mose Allison-style fare ("Mellow Chick Swing") that reveals he is his own (blues) man.

$13.39 Following the success of their self-titled debut, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' sophomore release, It'll Shine When It Shines, continues on their already established path of California-style country-rock. This release contained what would ultimately prove to be their greatest hit, "Jackie Blue," which ended up peaking at number three on the pop chart. Although "Jackie Blue" is ...

Ramblin' Mind album
$13.45 On his third album, Big Bill Morganfield -- yeah, mm-hmmm, he is Muddy's boy -- turns in a stylish set of originals and one cover of his daddy's ("Evil") that should have been left off and should have never been recorded after Howlin' Wolf's version. But that's just a personal preference. Big Bill knows how to do the Chicago blues rave up. He keeps the tempered delivery of a song until it smolders with quiet intensity before exploding in the bridge. It may be formula, but he does it so well it doesn't feel that way. Morganfield also knows how to actually "write" a Chicago blues song. He ...

| | Rusty Zinn Zinfedelity Vol. 1 CD (2005)
Ramblin' Mind music CDs
$13.39 Singer/songwriting guitarist Rusty Zinn shifts gears on his fourth album, and first in nearly five years, to become a blue-eyed, red-headed soulman. That's not to say he abandons the jazzy, guitar-slinging West Coast/Texas swinging sound that dominated his first three releases. In fact, the second track, an original called "Treat You Like a Queen," shows that style is still a primary influence. But Zinnfidelity, Vol. 1 highlights Zinn's love of classic '70s-styled R&B, focusing on his soulful vocals and sizzling arrangements that wouldn't have been out of place on Howard Tate's magnificent debut. To that end, he dusts off obscure sides from Tiny Powell ("Get My Hat"), Sammy Taylor ("Ain't That Some Shame"), and Ricky Allen ("Talkin' Bout You"), all songs that should have been hits but were buried on rare 45s. Zinn attacks them with fresh energy, sticking to the original arrangements but injecting youthful enthusiasm and real emotion into the lyrics. A fan of reggae, he goes all Jimmy Cliff on his own "Put Your Hand ...
